49ers Fall 66-57 at Houston
HOUSTON, TX -- The Long Beach State women's basketball team dropped a 66-57 decision at Houston on Sunday afternoon from the Hofheinz Pavilion. Jayme Connors and Karina Figueroa both tallied nine points each in the losing effort for The Beach. Long Beach State (0-2) faces USC (1-0) for its home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. from The Walter Pyramid. Jeannie Saunders and Rosalyn Omoruyi both had eight points each for the 49ers, who shot just 36 percent from the field for the game. Sha'Ratta Hawkins paced the Cougars with a game-high 14 points. Houston shot 9-for-19 from three point range (.474) and 15-of-17 from the charity stripe. The Cougars owned a 43-30 lead at the 16:55 mark in the second half, before Long Beach State went on a furious 15-2 run to knot the score at 45-45 with 12:01 left in regulation. That was as close as the 49ers got, as Houston went up by five at 53-48 after a Hawkins jumper at the 10:07 mark. Houston held a 29-14 lead on Long Beach State after two consecutive free throws from Hawkins with 6:03 left in the half. The 49ers however trimmed the deficit to seven at 29-22 after a Meghan Griffith layup at the 3:43 mark. Houston pushed its lead back to double-digits (11) after a three-pointer by Kadi Creel with 3:32 left in the half, before a Saunders three-pointer with 51 seconds left cut the Cougars' lead to 35-27 at halftime. LBSU shot 37 percent from the field in the half (12-of-32), while Houston shot 50 percent from three-point range in the first half (6-of-12). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
