49ers Fall in OT at TCU

49ers Fall in Overtime, 71-68
FORT WORTH, TX -- Despite a game-high 23 points from freshman Karina Figueroa, the Long Beach State women's basketball team fell in overtime in its season-opener, 71-68 at TCU on Friday night. The 49ers (0-1) travel to Houston (0-1), who lost its season-opener to Wisconsin, 77-54, on Sunday at Noon (PST). Figueroa (Corona), also added 10 assists (one turnover) in her 49er debut. Senior Jayme Connors also notched a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Crystal McCutcheon poured in 16 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range. Three TCU players recorded double-doubles, with Lorie Butler-Rayford leading the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Long Beach State led TCU in virtually every statistical category, except for rebounds and turnovers. The 49er bench even out-scored the Lady Frogs' bench, 10-7. The 49ers rallied from a 12-point second half deficit (47-35) with a 14-0 run to take a 49-47 lead with 9:50 left in regulation. During that scoring run, McCutcheon was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. Long Beach State owned its biggest lead of the game, seven, at 64-57 after freshman Mary Has nailed a three-pointer with 5:08 left in the game. TCU rallied back to cut the lead to three (63-66) after Vanessa Clementino hit a layup with 3:28 left in regulation. Ashley Davis tied the game up at 66-66 with 1:10 left to send it to overtime. The Beach struck first in overtime after a Figueroa jumper made the score, 68-66 at the 4:38 mark. A Davis three-pointer followed by two free throws from Moneka Knight with 18 seconds left in the overtime period, sealed the three-point victory for TCU.
