IRVINE, CA-- No. 25-ranked Long Beach State (12-4-1, 3-2-0 Big West) stumbled on its way to a possible post-season berth, falling 2-0 at UC Irvine (5-11-2, 1-4-1 Big West) The loss snapped a four-game win streak by The Beach, and further complicated the conference race.

The 49ers control their own destiny, and can win the Big West title or watch the conference tournament from the sidelines depending on how it plays on the final weekend.

The 49ers can still win the Big West title, and host the Big West Tournament, if they can win their final two games at UC Riverside on Friday and against CS Fullerton at home on Sunday. Based on a couple of different scenarios, though their chances are good at reaching the post-season, LBSU can still be eliminated.

At the end of play Sunday, the conference standings sit with UC Riverside with 14 points, CS Fullerton with 12 points, LBSU, Pacific and CS Northridge with nine points, Cal Poly with seven points, UC Santa Barbara with six points and UC Irvine with four. The Titans and 49ers have two games remaining, UCR, UCI, the Mustangs and Gauchos have one remaining. CS Northridge and Pacific are both done playing. Everyone but UCI have a chance at reaching the post-season with one weekend remaining.

In a rough and tumble game today, the Anteaters went up 1-0 in the 22nd minute when Liz Ramos (Bakersfield) could not control a pass back by the 49er defense. With the ball right outside the box, Ramos could not pick it, as Britney Webster stole it away and scored.

Sara Baca (Ventura) had a chance to tie it in the 25th minute, but a point blank shot from 15 yards was caught by UCI goalkeeper Erin Henry. Baca's shot in the 84th minute with UCI up 2-0 was also saved by another UCI goalkeeper, Rose Aguilera. The 49ers who had eight shots, peppered the goal with five on goal.

The 49ers thought they had the momentum back after halftime, using a four-person front, but a hard foul at midfield to defender Julie Megorden in the 54th minute, resulted in just a yellow card, and seemed to change the momentum back to UCI.

Ten minutes later Megan Ortiz drove the ball up from the rightside to make it 2-0 in the 64th minute, as the Anteaters played back for the rest of the game.

The Anteaters had six shots on the day, and just that one goal, in the first half.
