49ers Move Into First Place with 89-74 Win
NORTHRIDGE, CA--- Long Beach State women's basketball (7-4, 3-1 Big West) moved into a tied for first place, thanks to career nights from Aisha Hollans, Jeannie Saunders and Candice Wilson in defeating CS Northridge (7-4, 3-1 Big West) 89-74 on Saturday evening. It was a season-high for points for The Beach. With the win and UC Santa Barbara's loss to Idaho, LBSU, CSUN and UCSB are all in first place at 3-1. Hollans tallied a LBSU-best 24 points, while Saunders added a career-best 17 points. Wilson set a career-high with 13 assists including 10 in the first half. LBU shot 44 percent for the contest, rebounding with a 54 percent clip in the second half. CSUN shot 44 percent for the game, and 42 percent in the second half as LaJoyce King had 20 points and eight rebounds. But LBSU seemed to always have an answer, as a Saunders layup with 3:18 was the final nail to put The Beach up for good. Northridge would not give in, as a Alexis Johnson three-pointer kept it close, at 71-65 with 4:01 left. Two free throws by Hollans made it 67-58 with 6:58 left after CSUN had closed to within five. King's running three-pointer closed CSUN to its closest deficit of the contest, at 63-58 with 7:50 remaining, cutting the Niner lead in half over the previous six minutes A Hollans steal and layup with 13:41 left gave LBSU some breathing room at 54-46, forcing a CSUN timeout. A Hollans layup would push the lead to 10 a minute later. Like Thursday night, LBSU started the game on a tear, leading 27-8 with 10:03 left on a Gläser layup only to watch the opponent come back. It was then all CSUN, going on a 24-9 run the rest of the half. The Matadors shot 47 percent in the first half, compared to just a 38 percent clip by The Beach. The 49ers finished the half with six first half turnovers, committing just one over the first 12 minutes of play. Wilson already set her career-high with 10 assists. The 49ers return home next week when they begin a four-game homestand, beginning with CS Fullerton next Thursday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
