49ers Hold Off Pacific 68-60
STOCKTON, CA-- In a game of streaks, Long Beach State (6-4, 2-1 Big West) held off a final push by host Pacific (3-7, 1-2 Big West) to win 68-60 in Big West Conference action on Thursday. Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) returned to the Bay Area for the second time in a month and tallied her fifth-straight double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) added 16 points and nine rebounds. "It was a big win for us, being the first road game of conference and the fact that Pacific had lost just one time in Big West play at home over the past three years," said LBSU Head Coach Mary Hegarty. "We started each half strong, and I'm glad how our team responded once Pacific made their runs. We dug in and increased our lead." After the 49ers opened the half on a 22-6 run to lead by 19, and then built up a 60-43 with 7:30 left, Pacific used a 9-2 run to close to within 62-52 on a Jessica Brantly three-pointer with 3:59 left. Gläser and Hollans then converted back-to-back shots over the next two minutes to lead 66-54 with 2:30 remaining and never look back. Pacific ended the game shooting 40 percent, shooting 39 percent in the second half, as Dana Zimmerman ended the contest with 17 points. She had just five second half points. LBSU shot 39 percent, but rebounded with a 47 percent clip in the second half. The Beach used a 22-6 run to open the half and lead 54-35 with 10:52 on a Saunders shot, before Pacific countered with a 17-8 run to close to within 10 over the next seven minutes. The 49ers opened up the second frame, much like the first, going on a 9-2 run to lead 41-31 and force a Pacific timeout with 16:52 left. Hollans went on a personal 5-0 run to double a five point lead to double digits, at 17:3, to give LBSU a 39-29 lead. After a blistering start, Long Beach State held on to a 32-29 lead at the half. The 49ers started the half, well in control, leading 15-3 on a Hollans jumper at 15:02 only to see Pacific fight its way back. Over the next 12 minutes, UOP would go on a 24-7 run to close to within 25-24 with three minutes left, thanks in part to Zimmerman, who had 12 first half points and three, three-pointers. The 49ers shot 31 percent for the half, while Pacific shot 40 percent. The 49ers remain on the road on Saturday when they travel to CS Northridge for a contest at 7 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
