LBSU Too Much For Aggies, 63-36
LOGAN, UT – The Long Beach State women's basketball team cruised to a 63-36 win over host Utah State in a Big West Conference game at The Spectrum on Saturday night. Long Beach State improved to 12-5 (7-2 Big West), while Utah State fell to 10-8 (5-4 Big West). "Basically we tried to be solid with our principles tonight," said 49er head coach Mary Hegarty. "Our help responsibilities were pretty solid as well. I was very pleased with that. I am obviously pleased with the start we got, and to be able to hold a team scoreless for so long is great." Petra Glaser paced the 49ers with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Jeannie Saunders tallied 12 points and six rebounds. Jayme Connors poured in nine points and six rebounds, while point guards, Crystal McCutcheon and Candice Wilson combined for 12 points, five assists, and one steal. The 49ers shot 43 percent from the field (23-of-53) and out-rebounded the Aggies, 51-35. The only blemish for the 49ers were the 26 turnovers. Brittany Tressler led Utah State with nine points in the losing effort. USU shot a dismal 20 percent from the field (12-of-60). The 49ers kept their second half intensity and built a 27 point lead (45-18) after a Glaser jumper from the wing at the 13:23 mark. Two consecutive lay-ups by Saunders put LBSU up by 29 (59-30) with 3:28 left in the game. Long Beach State owned the first half by forcing 14 Utah State turnovers and limiting the Aggies to just .080 shooting from the field (2-for-25). In fact Utah State didn't record its first point until 5:17 in the first half on a Camille Brox free throw. The 49ers shot 41 percent from the field (12-of-29) and converted 6-of-10 from the charity stripe. LBSU quickly jumped out to an 11-0 lead after a Saunders lay-up at 13:14. The 49ers pushed their lead to 19-0 after a Saunders three-pointer with 7:33 in the half. Long Beach State owned its biggest lead of the first half (27) after a Connors jumper gave LBSU a 31-4 lead at the 2:17 mark.
