Long Beach State Falls to Idaho, 70-55
MOSCOW, ID – The Long Beach State women's basketball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Idaho Vandals, 70-55, in a Big West Conference game on Thursday night in the Cowan Spectrum. Long Beach State fell to 11-5 (6-2 Big West), while Idaho improved to 11-6 (6-2 Big West). Aisha Hollans paced the 49ers with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Fernanda Santos chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. Jayme Conners posted eight points and five rebounds. Crystal McCutcheon had seven points and two steals. Petra Glaser added six points and eight rebounds and two blocks. Emily Faurholt scored a game-high 26 points for the Vandals. The 49ers shot just 38 percent from the field (24-of-63), and out-rebounded Idaho 42-36, but committed five more turnovers than the Vandals (21-16). LBSU only attempted one three-pointer (0-for-1). Idaho shot .404 from the field (23-of-57) and hit 7-of-24 from three-point range. The Vandals hit 17-of-20 from the charity stripe (LBSU hit 7-of-12 from the free throw line). The Vandals out-scored the 49ers in the second half, 41-28, and shot 50 percent from the field (11-of-22). Idaho pulled away from the 49ers at the 8:00 mark with a three-pointer from Stephanie Sax to push the lead to 11 (55-44). The Vandals went up by 17 after a jumper by Jessica Summers. Despite shooting just .394 from the field (13-of-33), Long Beach State was down 29-27 at halftime. Santos poured in seven points on 3-of-3 shooting from the field, while Hollans contributed four points and eight rebounds. The 49ers turned the ball over 13 times. Idaho jumped out to an 8-2 lead after a Summers jumper. The Vandals pushed their lead to 11-4 after a Heather Thoelke three-pointer. The 49ers used a 6-4 run to cut the lead to 15-10 after a McCutcheon jumper with 9:05 in the half. LBSU tied the score at 19-19 after a Glaser jumper on the right elbow at 6:02. Long Beach State took the lead for the first time in the game at 23-22 after another Glaser jumper with 4:58 left in the half. Idaho proceeded to go on a 7-2 run highlighted by a Faurholt three-pointer for a 29-25 lead at 2:24. Christina Mack connected for a lay-up with 19 seconds left to cut the deficit to two into the break.
