Hollans, 49ers Win Fifth Straight
LONG BEACH, CA-- Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) took over midway through the second half, going on a personal 10-0 run, as Long Beach State (9-4, 5-1 Big West) ran its win streak to five straight with a 70-47 win over UC Riverside. Hollans and fellow senior, Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) both had double-doubles for the 49ers. Hollans finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the year, while Gläser added 18 points and 10 rebounds. LBSU shot 42 percent for the game, including 44 percent in the second half. The five-game win streak matched its longest Big West winning streak in four years. The team's 23-point win was their largest margin of victory of the season. The Highlanders managed just 16 second half points, shooting 29 percent in the second half. UCR shot 36 percent for the game as Cassandra Reeves led with 10 points and seven assists. Hollans would score 12 of the team's 16 points as part of a 16-4 run by The Beach to make it 63-43 with 7:06 left. Two free throws by Hollans followed by consecutive jumpers over a minute and a half stretch gave LBSU a 53-39 lead with 9:54 left, forcing a Highlander timeout. Following a timeout, a fastbreak layup by Hollans off a steal made it 55-39 with 9:23 left, before Hollans finished with a personal 10-0 run moments later. The 49ers led 35-31 at the half, in a defensive-minded first half. LBSU shot 40 percent, compared to a 43 percent clip for UCR. McCutcheon's three-point play at 6:31 extended the 49ers lead to 25-16, as part of a 15-6 run. The Highlanders would cut the lead by five over the final six and half minutes of the half thanks to a 15-10 run. The 49ers remain home next week when they host UC Irvine on Thursday and UC Davis on Saturday | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
