Beach Uses 22-2 Run to Defeat Fullerton

49ers Come Back Big, Defeat CS Fullerton
LONG BEACH, CA-- After trailing by 15 points early in the second half, Long Beach State (8-4, 4-1 Big West) remained in first place with a 22-2 run to hold on and defeat visiting CS Fullerton (1-11, 0-4 Big West) 76-68 on Thursday night. The Beach have now won four in a row, while the Titans have dropped eight straight. Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) after a slight scoring slump, rebounded with a team-high 17 points, leading five 49ers in double digits. Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) and Jeannie Saunders (Long Beach/Wilson HS) added 12 points a piece, while Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) and Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 10 points a piece. LBSU shot 46 percent for the game and 45 percent in the second half. Amber Pruitt scored a game-high 21 points, but only four in the second half, while Charlee Underwood added 16 points. The Titans shot 43 percent for the contest, cooling off to a 33 percent clip in the second half. McCutcheon sealed the game with 2:18 left as the benefactor of a fastbreak layup, giving LBSU a 72-66 lead. The 49ers used a run of their own, 22-2 in fact, to take a 62-60 on a Saunders three-pointer with 8:45 left. The run lasted just over seven minutes. An Amber Pruitt jumper at 16:00 would make it 55-40, as Fullerton opened up the half on a 12-3 run. The Titans took a 43-37 lead at the half behind a 52 percent clip from the field. Fullerton converted 10-of-13 free throws, compared to just 3-of-6 for the 49ers, who shot 47 percent. CSF led by as much as nine in the first half, 37-28, at 4:56, before LBSU cut it to 41-37 with 30 seconds left in the half.
