49ers Finish Fifth at Big West; Goldhammer Wins Again

Men and Women Both Fifth at Big West Champs IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State men's and women's track both finished in fifth place at the Big West Conference Championships to champion CS Northridge, scoring 100 points to the Matadors' 165 on the women's side and tallying 88 points to CSUN's 157 on the men's side. LBSU garnered 12 All-Big West honors for the week, six for each gender, as Ami Goldhammer completed a very successful Championship with a first place title in the javelin on Saturday, after winning the Heptathalon on Thursday. Goldhammer's tosss of 154'0" completed the sweep for the senior as Serena Boykin also earned All-BWC honors on Saturday with a third place finish in the shot put, at 49'3.75". The men's team picked up five of their six all-conference trophies on Saturday, as Doug Lefler bested his own school-record with a toss of 235'2", further qualifying him for the Olympic Trials in Sacramento. Sean Blanford finished third to Lefler in the javelin with a toss of 189'2". Shingo Suzumura was second in the 110-meter high hurdles with a sprint of 14.60. Steve Holland finished third in the hammer with a toss of 191'02", while Charles Lewis was third in the 400-meter with a time of 47.854. Other All-Big West performers from the week included: Jennifer Yadon (steeple chase, 3rd), Emily Forsythe (high jump, 3rd), Stephanie Sampson (hammer, 1st) and John Temidara (high jump, 1st). |
