The Streak Continues: Gauchos Defeat Beach, 66-49 LONG BEACH, CA--UC Santa Barbara (23-6, 17-1 Big West) continued its 10 year domination over Long Beach State (12-15, 8-10), defeating The Beach 66-49 on Saturday night in the Goldmine. The 49ers would come no closer then six points in the second half as the Gauchos would go on a 20-0 run putting the game out of reach. The 49ers opened up the second half with a 10-2 run to close within 37-31 after a three-point play by Jayme Connors with 13:11 left to play, but would come no closer as UCSB would pull away on a 20-0 run to put the game away. Petra Gläser led The Beach with 16 points, while Jayme Connors led the team with eight rebounds. The team shot 37% (20-54) from the field and were out-rebounded 41-to-25. They committed 15 turnovers, a vast improvement from Thursday night's season-worst 30 against Cal Poly. The Gauchos were led by Mia Fisher with 17 points and Lindsay Taylor with 16 points. Taylor also led the team with eight rebounds as UCSB shot 46% from the field. s Long Beach was held scoreless for over seven minutes before a basket by Deja Blevins with just over five minutes to play broke the drought. UCSB went into the break up 35-21, shooting 50% (15-30) from the field and holding LB to just 32%. The Gauchos out-rebounded the 49ers 25-to-10 in the first half. Gläser led The Beach with 11 points, while Lindsay Taylor and Mia Fisher led Santa Barbara with 12 and 10 points respectively. Gläser drained a three with 15:16 left in the first half, giving Long Beach its first and only lead of the game as the Gauchos would go on a 12-0 run, holding The Beach scoreless for nearly seven minutes, to lead 20-9 with 8:21 on the clock. The fifth-seeded 49ers will next play on Wednesday, March 10 at 12:00 p.m in the first round of the Big West Tournament as they face the #8 seed, Utah State. The 49ers split the regular season with Utah State, winning on the road, and losing at home. The seeds for the Big West Tournament are: UCSB (1st), Idaho (2nd), Pacific (3), Cal Poly (4), Long Beach (5), Cal State Fullerton (6), UC Riverside (7), and Utah State (8). |
