49ers Open up Outdoor Season on Saturday

49ers Host 63rd Annual Jack Rose Relays LONG BEACH, CA--The Beach track and field team will open up its outdoor season this Saturday at home with the 63rd Annual Jack Rose Relays. This will be the first meet athletes can qualify for the conference and regional championships. The meet will feature over 20 different schools including USC, UNLV, Cal State Dominguez, Cal Poly, and numerous junior colleges. Field events begin at 8:30 with the men's hammer, while action on the track will begin at 10:00 with the 4x400m relays. The track and field team is coming off a solid indoor season in which two athletes (Emily Forsythe and John Temidara) earned all-conference honors and has the potential to make heads turn beginning with their performances on Saturday. "We are initiating our 2004 campaign to bring a championship to Long Beach State. Saturday will be an opportunity to see our talented recruiting class perform for their first time outdoors as well as our redshirts who took last season off to develop themselves," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. Top newcomers include Robert Nelson (long jump), Temidara (high and triple jump), Charles Lewis (Sprints), Katelyn Ciarelli (throws), Kristina Price (throws), Kimberly Heinz (javlein), Josh Campbell (distance), Crystal Roethlisberger (distance), Jessica Branker (sprints), and Franchelle Smith (Sprints). "We have a solid returning team from last year. Blending in the new athletes and redshirts with this group should equate to a successfull meet for the Beach." Topr returners include Emily Forsythe (high jump), Haben Hagos (jumps), Ronald Carter (jumps), Gina Londono (sprints), Shingo Suzumura (sprints), Ryan Kroll (sprints), Jennifer Yadon (distance), Terrance Wroblewski (distance), Serena Boykin (throws), Stephanie Sampson (throws), and Sean Blandford (javelin). |
