LBSU Closes Out IPFW, 3-1 Wottoon Records Career Kill No. 1,000
March 20, 2004 Long Beach, CA – The No. 2-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated the IPFW Mastodons, 3-1, in the Asics/Active Ankle Beach Bash on Saturday night in The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-21, 30-16, 30-32, 30-27.
Long Beach State improved to 19-4, while IPFW fell to 10-6. The match was a non-conference affair.
Senior Jeff Wootton became the 13th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills, after registering a team-high 17 kills. Wootton also added seven digs, and one ace. Scott Touzinsky posted 16 kills and a match-high five aces, to go along with six digs. Robert Tarr chipped in with 10 kills, four digs, and four blocks. Tyler Hildebrand directed the offense with a match-best 60 assists. Matt Zbyszewski recorded a match-high 28 kills for IPFW in the losing effort. As a team, the 49ers connected for a .394 attack percentage (74-22-132) and totaled 11 aces. LBSU also out-dug the Mastodons, 42-28.
Led by Wootton's six kills, LBSU took game one, 30-21. The 49ers broke a 14-14 tie in the set with a 13-4 run to push their lead to 27-18, courtesy of an IPFW attack error. Long Beach State closed out IPFW on a Wootton kill. Touzinsky also added six kills in the frame. As a team, the 49ers hit for a .364 attack percentage (18-6-33). Zbyszewski chipped in six kills for IPFW. The Mastodons only had 12 kills in the game.
Long Beach State took a 2-0 match lead after a 30-16 game two victory. Wootton added six more kills in the frame. LBSU built leads of seven (10-3), 10 (23-13), and 14 to close the game (30-16). The 49ers hit for a .394 clip (17-4-33), and limited IPFW to just a -.071 hitting percentage (3-5-28).
IPFW managed to avoid a three-game sweep with a 32-30 game three victory. The Mastodons limited their attack errors and registered a .552 clip (18-2-29). IPFW fought off match point at 29-28 after a Zbyszewski kill to tie the score at 29-29. IPFW staved off match point a second time at 30-29 after another Zbyszewski kill to knot the score at 30-30. The Mastadons earned their next two points courtesy of LBSU attack errors.
LBSU eventually closed out the match, 30-27 on a block from Lee.
