49ers Travel North for Stanford Invitational

49ers Head North for Stanford Invitational LONG BEACH, CA--The track and field team will travel 44 athletes to Palo Alto this weekend to compete in one of the premier track events of the year, the Stanford Invitational. "Many of the nations top-ranked teams will be in attendance, as well as several Olympic hopefuls," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "This is an opportunity for our athletes to compete at the national level and test us to see how prepared we are for the upcoming post-season." The Stanford Invitational is a two-day meet with open field events and preliminary races on Friday, March 26 and the premier and open sections of field events and finals for races on Saturday, March 27. "Our goal coming into this meet is to better our marks, work out technical changes, and further advance our athletes to the Big West and Regional Championships in May," said Sythe. So far, The Beach has picked up 25 qualifying marks for the women and 18 qualifying marks for the men for the conference championships, while ther 49ers have six qualifying marks for the women and four qualifying marks for the men for the regional championships. Two school-records have fallen in the outdoor season, both coming from javelin throwers. Doug Lefler, the conference leader, has broken the record twice with the current record standing at 225'10". Kim Heinz has also broken the school-record twice and currently ranks third in the conference with a best of 145'02". Including Heinz and Lefler, five 49er throwers rank in the top-three in the conference. Lefler leads the javelin, while teammate Sean Blandford ranks second with a best of 207'09". Steve Holland ranks second in the hammer throw with a best of 188'05" and Serena Boykin currently ranks third in the shot put with a best of 50'03.50". Six marks by the jumps group rank in the top-three in the conference. Leading the way with the top mark in the high jump is John Temidara with a best of 7'00.25". Teammate Haben Hagos currently ranks third in that event with a best of 6'09.75". Temidara also ranks second in the triple jump with a best mark of 48'05.50". Emily Forsythe leads the women jumpers with a second-place ranking in the high jump (5'08.75"). Aroline Neal ranks third in the long jump (18'07.75"), while Megan Irey ranks third in the triple jump (40'06.25"). In the sprints, Shingo Suzumura continues to lead the conference in the 110m hurdles with a best of 14.41. Nathan Enriquez ranks third in the 400m hurdles with a best of 53.65. The ladies 4x400m relay ranks second with a best of 3:52.88. The 49ers will look to increase conference and regional qualifiers this weekend at the Stanford Invitational, as well as move up in the conference rankings. |
