49ers Head to Land of Troy

Track Heads to Land of Troy LONG BEACH, CA--The Beach track and field team will travel to Los Angeles on Saturday to compete in the USC Invitational. The meet features USC, LBSU, Washington State, Sacramento State, Weber State, UNLV, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Fullerton, Cerritos College, and Long Beach City College. The meet, usually a one day affair, will spread to two days because of the number of entries for this year's meet. A section of field events will be held on Friday, March 19, starting with the women's hammer at 12:00 p.m., while the majority of the meet will take place on Saturday, March 20. Women's hammer will open up the second day of competition at 8:30 a.m. Track events will start with the women's 3000m race at 9:45 a.m. All of the hammer competition will take place at West L.A. College. "USC is always a great place to compete because there is so much history within that program," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "This is going to be a tough meet with tough competition and I know that we will put up some great marks and times on Saturday." With only one meet under their belt, the 49ers have already qualified 33 athletes for the Big West Championships and nine athletes for the West Regional Championships. The team also has 13 marks ranking in the top-three of the conference. Three male athletes hold the top mark in their event group. They are: Doug Lefler in the javelin with a best of 223'10", Steve Holland in the hammer with a best of 188'05.00", Shingo Suzumura in the 110m hurdles with a best of 14.58 and John Temidara with a best of 7'00.25" in the high jump. Other 49ers ranked in the top-three in conference are: Serena Boykin (shot-49'11.25", Disc- 157'07"), Emily Forsythe (high jump-5'08.00"), Kim Heinz (javelin-144'5.00"), Megan Irey (triple jump-38'06.75"), Stephanie Sampson (hammer-178'02.00"), Sean Blandford (javelin-207'09.00") and Bobby Lugo (discus-160'07.00", hammer-172'06.00").
