LBSU Struggles in Second Half, Falls to UCI

49ers Fall to Irvine, 60-50 LONG BEACH, CA--The 49ers committed just four second half turnovers, but shot 26.5% as Long Beach State (10-13, 6-8 Big West) fell to UC Irvine (6-16, 5-9 Big West) 60-50 on Saturday night. UCI had not defeated LBSU in 11 meetings. Irvine had three players in double-digits in the victory, as the team shot 63% from the field in the second half. Irvine's Green knocked down a trey with 3:35 to play to give the Anteaters a 54-46 lead. Petra Gläser picked up a basket at the 2:16 mark to close within 54-48, but a lay-up by Shayna Stanley would push Irvine's lead back to 56-48 and seal the victory for the Anteaters. Christina Mack led The Beach with 13 points, while Gläser picked up her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Beach were out-rebounded 37-to-35 and were a dismal 9-of-34 (.265) in the second half. Green led the Anteaters with 17 points, while Christina Callaway and Stanley had 14 and 13 points respectively. Ashley Biggins led UCI with 14 rebounds as the team shot 45% for the game. Connie Ferguson drained a three with 9:20 remaining to push Irvine's lead to 45-36. LBSU brought the game within 49-43 after an 8-4 run, capped off by a Candice Wilson jumper with just under six minutes to play. Irvine opened up the second half with a 9-0 run to lead 30-25 with 17:26 left to play. A pull-up jumper by Crystal McCutcheon with just under 17 minutes left in the game broke the 49ers scoring drought, pulling the 49ers within 30-27. LBSU led by as many as 10 before the Anteaters used a 10-4 run to close within 25-21 at the halftime break. Mack led The Beach with nine points while Green led UCI with eight. Long Beach shot 50% from the field and held Irvine to just 30% in the first half, but gave up 12 turnovers compared to UCI's eight. The Beach will hit the road next week as they travel to Utah State on Thursday, February 26 and Idaho on Saturday, February 28. |
