Glaser Leads 49ers with 27 Points

49ers Split Classic Thanks to Gläser's 27 Points
STONY BROOK, NY-- Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) scored a career-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting as Long Beach State (3-1) fought off nine three-pointers from host Stony Brook (0-4) to win 88-82 on the final day of the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Classic. Gläser, who also had seven rebounds, led a quartet in double figures. Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) added her second-straight double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) tallied 17 points, five rebounds, four steals and five assists. Christina Mack rounded out the scoring with 11 points. Jessica Smith tallied 21 points and 14 rebounds for SBU, leading five players in double figures as Mykeema Ford had 18 points and eight assists. The Seawolves, who shot 46 percent for the game, including 48 percent in the second half, converted 9-of-23 three-pointers, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Jessie Boylan. Long Beach State shot a season-high 55 percent from the field, including 57 percent in the second half. After SBU tied it at 69-69 with five minutes left, LBSU went on an 11-4 run to put the contest out of reach, as McCutcheon's long-range jumper at 4:52 made it 77-71, before an assist to Connors at 2:39 made it 80-73. The Beach opened the half on a 16-7 run, leading 54-44 with 15:29 left on a Gläser layup, before the Seawolves used their own 17-5 run over the next four minutes to close to within 61-59 on a Jessie Boylan jumper. A Ford free throw at 8:32 tied the game at 65-65, completing a 21-11 run by SBU. The 49ers took a 38-37 lead at the half as Connors led a 3-on-1 break to end the half, passing ahead to Candice Wilson with 10 seconds left to give LBSU the lead. The 49ers shot 52 percent over the first 20 minutes, compared to a 44 percent clip for the Seawolves. SBU stayed in the game thanks to four three-pointers in a very closely played first half. The 49ers remain on the road through next week, traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area for two games, at USF on Thursday and at California on Sunday. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
