UCSB Comes Back and Defeats The Beach 85-80
LONG BEACH, CA-- Defending Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara (3-4, 1-0 Big West) made it count at the end, going on a 16-4 run over the final two and a half minutes of regulation and then the first 2:52 of overtime to come back and defeat host Long Beach State (4-4, 0-1 Big West) 85-80 in overtime. The 49ers had led 69-64 with 2:29 left in regulation on a Crystal McCutcheon jumper, only to see UCSB go on a 5-0 run, which included three-of-four from the charity stripe and a layup by Kristen Mann with 38 seconds left to close the deficit to 69-68. LBSU still led by that margin before a steal from Karina Bond and 1-of-2 free throws with 7.8 seconds left, tied the game at 69-69. Santa Barbara then went on an 11-4 run to start the overtime frame to lead 80-75 on a Bond's three-pointer. Mann finished the contest with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-25 shooting, while McCutcheon countered with 16 points. The Beach shot 49 percent for the contest, while UCSB hit 43 percent of its shots for the game. Brandy Richardson added 16 points and 11 rebounds for UCSB, while Aisha Hollans countered with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds for LBSU. The two teams went into the overtime frame tied at 69-69, as Mia Fisher scored four of her 15 points in the overtime frame to give UCSB a 77-73 lead. The Beach shot 56 percent in the second half, compared to the Gauchos' 35 percent clip, but UCSB would convert 9-of-13 free throws in the second half, compared to just 3-of-3 for the 49ers. The 49ers dominated midway through the second half, using an 11-2 run, capped by a Fernanda Santos three-point to lead 59-54 with 8:31 remaining. LBSU would remain in front by five points until the final minute of the contest. Santa Barbara led 39-38 at the half, hitting five three-pointers, despite its 42 percent clip from the field. LBSU shot 54 percent in an evenly played first half, as The Beach fought through foul trouble much of the first 20 minutes. Despite three of the team's guards with two fouls a piece, LBSU fought back from a five-point deficit with 8:44 left to its first lead, at 31-30, off a Mack steal and layup with 4:31 left. The Beach extended their lead to 34-31 on a Santos jumper at 3:33, capping an 8-2 run. UCSB's fourth three-pointer gave the Gauchos a 19-11 lead with 14 minutes remaining. Santa Barbara would hit just one more three-pointer the rest of the half. The 49ers continue conference play against Cal Poly on Thursday, while UCSB plays at UC Irvine. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
