Former Track Athlete Fights For Her Life LONG BEACH, CA-- Brandii Ruiz (Whittier), a former 400-meter hurdler on the Long Beach State track and field team, along with her family, are asking the community be a part of a Marrow Registration Drive on January 19 at Alhambra City Hall, not only to save her life, but others, in which a marrow or blood stem cell transplant could be a cure. Ruiz competed for the 49ers in 2003 after redshirting in 2002, but had to quit the team last year after developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. After a year of treatment, Ruiz was ready to enroll in school, only to have the disease return. Her father, Alhambra Reserve Sergeant George Ruiz, has spearheaded a Marrow Drive, which will not only take sign ups at (626) 570-5177 or 5146 but monetary donations. A 24-hour recorded hotline for more information is at (626) 570-5123, while information is also available on the web at www.cityofalhambra.org/about/Brandii.html. Information can also be sought at www.marrow.org.
