49ers Fall in Exhibition 90-72
LONG BEACH, CA-- The Play Mode All-Stars went on an 18-8 run midway through the second half and ran away with a 90-72 exhibition win over host Long Beach State. Local Wilson High product Jeannie Saunders (Long Beach) had an impressive 49er debut scoring a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, adding six steals as well. Former Arkansas State star Tanisha Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench, while former USC product, Rometra Craig, added 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting for the All-Stars. The more athletic All-Stars shot 50% for the contest, including 53% in the second half. Three 49ers scored in double digits as Candice Wilson (Sacramento) scored 16 points off the bench, followed by Saunders and 13 points from Petra Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany). Gläser also had nine rebounds, while Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) had a game-high seven assists and six steals. LBSU was limited to just 36% shooting in the second half and 40% for the game. After the 49ers led by two after the first five minutes of the second frame, the All-Stars went on an 18-8 run, to lead 60-52 with 10:34 left, forcing an LBSU timeout. The 49ers were never able to cut the lead to single digits after that. The 49ers started the second half strong, going on a 10-3 run to lead 44-42 on a Val Willhoit three-pointer at 14:59. LBSU then was plagued with foul trouble as Jayme Connors picked up her fourth foul at 13:50, followed by three fouls a piece, within a minute by Willhoit and Cynetha Rush. Play Mode built a 54-50 lead by the 13 minute mark and doubled it over the next three minutes. Play Mode would take a 39-34 lead at the half behind 11 first half points from Craig. The All-Stars would take a nine-point lead midway through the first half and remain in front for the rest of the half. Play Mode shot 46%, while the 49ers hit for 44%. Saunders had nine first half points and seven rebounds for LBSU. Cal State Los Angeles product Lisa Moya came into the game at the 13 minute mark and proceeed to score back-to-back layups to give the All-Stars its biggest lead of the half, at 19-10, with 12:00 left. The 49ers will play one more exhibition, on November 19 against Love and Basketball, before opening up the regular season, at home, against Montana on November 24. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
