Beach Fall to Utah State 63-60 LONG BEACH, CA--A lay-up by Christina Zdenek with 24.7 seconds remaining lifted Utah State (3-14, 3-6 Big West) to its first women's basketball win over Long Beach State (8-10, 4-5 Big West) 63-60 on Saturday night. The Beach had three players in double-digits including Jayme Connors with her third double-double of the season in the loss. Utah State came back from a four-point halftime deficit to win the game shooting 57%, while LBSU managed just 37% for the half. Petra Gläser led The Beach with 18 points, while Jayme Connors chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Christina Mack was the third player in double-digits for LBSU with 12 points. The 49ers shot just 41% (22-for 54) for the game, while out-rebounding the Aggies 34-to-28. Both teams committed 22 turnovers for the game. Utah State also had three players in double-digits. The team was led by Brittany Tressler with 19, while Zdenek and Brittany Hagen had 15 and 10 points respectively. Ali Aird led USU with six rebounds. The Aggies shot 47% from the field. Down 53-51, with 6:06 remaining, Crystal McCutcheon drained a three to give the lead back to The Beach, 54-53. A lay-up by Christina Mack with 5:24 remaining pushed LBSU's lead to 56-53. With the 49ers up 46-43 and just under 10 minutes to play, USU's Terrin Johnston's lay-up brought the game within 46-45. Free throws by Tressler gave Utah State its first lead of the game, 47-46 with 9:12 remaining. The Beach went into the halftime break up 33-29 led by Wilson with 10 first-half points. LBSU shot 44% from rhe field and out-rebounded the Aggies 18-to-14, with both teams committing 16 turnovers. Utah State shot 39% from the field with Zdenek picking up 11 points. The 49ers will hit the road for two games next week as they travel to Northridge on Thursday, February 5 and Pacific on Saturday, February 7. |
