Strong Start Overcomes 49ers at UCSB

49ers Unable to Overcome Strong UCSB Start GOLETA, CA-- Lindsay Taylor's 15 points led five UC Santa Barbara (7-4, 1-0 Big West) players in double figures en route to a 78-67 victory over visiting Long Beach State (4-6, 0-1 Big West). For the No. 26-ranked Gauchos, it was the team's 24th-straight victory over LBSU. The 49ers scored just four points over the first 13 minutes, falling behind by as many as 17 in the first half. After a tough start, LBSU rebounded with just seven second half turnovers and a 53% clip over the final 20 minutes. Crystal McCutcheon came back after missing the past two games with a thumb injury to lead the 49ers with 18 points, tying a season-high with seven rebounds and adding a season-best seven assists. Petra Gläser and Lauren Bull added 14 points a piece. The 49ers shot 46% for the game. UCSB, who shot 55%, added 14 points and five assists from April McDivitt, 13 points from Mia Fischer and 12 points and five assists off the bench from Lisa Willett. Turnovers doomed the 49ers in the first half, as LBSU committed 15 first half turnovers, trailing 42-25. LBSU shot 37%, while UCSB opened up shooting 61%. The Gauchos broke open the game with 14 unanswered to lead 16-2 and led 19-4 after 13 minutes. Crystal McCutcheon saw her first action in two weeks, missing the last two games due to a torn tendon in her non-shooting thumb. LBSU played without Christina Mack, who missed the trip due to the flu. In other Big West action, CS Fulllerton defeated CS Northridge, Pacific topped UC Riverside 65-61 and Cal Poly defeated UC Irvine 60-56. The 49ers continue its Central Coast swing at Cal Poly on Monday at 7 p.m. before returning to The Pyramid for a mini two-game homestand matchup starting with Pacific on Thursday. |
