Touzinsky Breaks School Ace Record; Beach Tops Stanford Senior Notches 133rd Career Ace; Breaks Hilliard's 11 Year Mark
January 23, 2004 Long Beach, CA – On a record-setting night by Scott Touzinsky, the No. 2-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated the No. 6-ranked Stanford Cardinal, 3-1 in an MPSF conference match Friday evening in The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-22, 27-30, 30-27, 30-28.
Long Beach State improved to 7-1 (3-0 MPSF), while Stanford fell to 4-3 (2-1 MPSF).
Senior Scott Touzinsky became the all-time ace leader at Long Beach State with two on the night, and the 133rd of his career to pass Brent Hilliard's mark of 132 set in 1993. Jeff Wootton paced The Beach with a season-high 21 kills and a .472 attack percentage. Touzinsky also added 20 kills, six digs, and four blocks to his record-setting night. David Lee and Robert Tarr combined for 21 kills, while Nate Hagstrom chipped in with four digs and a career-best two solo blocks. Tyler Hildebrand netted 67 assists, eight digs, and three kills. Hildebrand (1,998 career assists) is two assists away from becoming the sixth player since 1988 to record 2,000 or more assists. As a team, the 49ers connected for a .399 attack percentage (77-20-143) and recorded 13.5 blocks. Four players led Stanford in kills: David Vogel (20), Chris Ahlfeldt (11), Craig Buell (10), and Patrick Bomhack (10).
Led by Wootton's six kills and .857 hitting percentage (6-0-7), Long Beach State took game one 30-22. Touzinsky added five kills and one ace, to highlight the top kill leaders for The Beach. As a team the 49ers connected for 21 kills on 29 swings (four errors) for a blistering .586 attack percentage, while registering eight digs and six blocks. Bomhack led the Cardinal with five kills in the frame. LBSU started the game on a 7-3 run, punctuated by a Lee kill. The 49ers increased their lead to as much as seven at 18-11 after a Touzinsky kill. Two straight attack errors by Stanford gave Long Beach State the eventual game victory.
Stanford rallied behind Vogel's six kills to even the match and earn a game two victory, 30-27. Despite hitting just .216 in the game, Stanford took advantage of eight Long Beach State attack errors. The 49ers in fact out-dug (12-10) and out-blocked (8-2) the Cardinal in the frame. Wootton and Touzinsky notched five kills each in the set for The Beach. Stanford pulled away in the game at 17-11 after a 49er service error, and later in the game at 26-19 after an Ahlfeldt kill. An LBSU attack error gave the Cardinal the eventual game winner.
Wootton maintained his hot hitting with five more kills, as Long Beach State rallied back to take game three, 30-27. The 49ers also limited their mistakes, notching 20 kills on 36 swings for a .444 clip. Lee, Touzinsky, and Tarr also combined for 10 kills for The Beach. The 49ers broke a 23-23 tie late with a 7-4 run, punctuated by a Wootton kill. Vogel only managed one kill in the third frame for Stanford. The Cardinal did however hit for a .438 clip in the game.
The 49ers closed out the Cardinal 30-28 in the fourth and final frame after a Stanford attack error.
The 49ers face Brigham Young University on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in The Pyramid.
