Connors Leads Beach to Second Straight RIVERSIDE, CA-- Jayme Connors led the Long Beach State 49ers (6-9, 2-4 Big West) with 16 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting en route to a 56-48 win over host UC Riverside (3-11, 2-3 Big West). Connors also keyed the 49ers run over the final two minutes with six straight points, two days after scoring a season-high 18 points at CS Fullerton. The 49ers have now won two straight after an 0-4 start to conference play. Petra Gläser and Crystal McCutcheon added 13 points a piece as LBSU outrebounded the Highlanders 39-to-31. Jode Reber led UCR with 12 points, while Cassandra Reeves added 11 points. UCR shot 34% for the game. Connors iced the game with 52 seconds left, giving the 49ers a 52-44 lead and capping six straight points by the forward. Connors layup at 1:33 followed two free throws at 2:23 extending a two-point lead to eight over the final two minutes. After a Jennifer Baker free throw made it 37-28 with 12:21 left, UCR went on a 12-3 run over the next four minutes to tie it at 40 on a Jodi Reber layup. The 49ers led for much of the first half, taking a 28-22 lead at the break, despite shooting 42%. UCR countered with a 29% clip, as four starters and a reserve picked up two fouls over the first 20 minutes. McCutcheon's steal on an inbounds play and resulting pass to Candice Wilson made it 25-20 with 1:23 left. McCutcheon's two free throws at 7:31 made it 17-13. The 49ers end their three-game roadtrip at UC Irvine next Saturday, January 24, at 7 p.m. |
