Long Beach Drops Fourth Straight, Lose to Northridge 66-52 LONG BEACH--The Long Beach State women's basketball team (4-9, 0-4 Big West) fell to Cal State Northridge (3-9, 2-2 Big West) 66-52, continuing its worst conference start in Long Beach State history. Northridge broke a 37 year losing streak in The Pyramid and the Gold Mine, dating back to the 1966-1977 season. In the series, it was the Matadors first triumph in five attempts. Down by 20, The Beach used a 13-4 run to close within 58-47 with four minutes left to play, but the Matadors lead would prove to be too much as CSUN would pull away with the win. Lauren Bull and Christina Mack led the 49ers with 12 points each, while Petra Gläser added 10. Jennifer Baker led the team with a season-high 12 rebounds. The 49ers shot a season-low 29% from the field and out-rebounded the Matadors 44-to-39. Ofa Tulikihihifo led the Matadors with 21 points while Kim Gildersleeve chipped in 14. CSUN shot 42% from the field and went 15-of-18 (.833) from the charity strip. Long Beach scored first to open up the second half, but Northridge went on a 7-0 run to lead 40-29 with 15:30 minutes left to play. Consecutive three pointers by Gildersleeve and a lay-up by Krisztina Fuleki gave the Matadors their largest lead of the game, 54-34, with just under nine minutes to play. Breyza Rhodes nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Northridge a 31-27 halftime lead. LBSU shot 33% from the field, while CSUN shot 39%. The Beach out-rebounded the Matadors 24-16 in the first half, but committed 12 turnovers, while Northridge had eight. LBSU led 20-13 before the Matadors charged back with a 13-2 run to lead 24-22 with less then four minutes to play in the first half. Starting guard Christina Mack made her first appearance in three games after sitting out with the flu coming off the bench midway through the first half. The 49ers will hit the road next week for three straight games starting Thursday, January 15 as they take on Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 p.m. |
