49ers Finish In 2nd Place At Oregon State
Freshman Ryan Wood Finishes 10th With A 214

CORVALLIS, OR --The Long Beach State men's golf team finished in second place at the 2003 Northwest Collegiate Classic at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, OR. Despite shooting a 292 in the final round on Tuesday, the 49ers shot a three-round total of 861 (285-284-292) to capture second place honors. UC Irvine, which shot a sizzling 277 in the final round, won the team title with an 846. Washington State came in third at 863 and New Mexico State and Oregon tied for fourth at 869.

49er freshman Ryan Wood (Oceanside) shot a 69 in the final round and finished the tournament tied for 10th place with a two-under-par 214. Senior Torey Edwards (Long Beach) and sophomore Todd Saukkola (Villa Park) both tied for 16th place with a one-under-par 215. Redshirt freshman Brett Lederer tied for 28th with a 219 (73-72-74) and senior Chris Gilley tied for 46th with a 223 (73-74-76). Cal Poly's Travis Bertoni won the individual title with a 204 (66-66-72), followed by UC Irvine's Vinnie Poncino, who shot a 205 (65-73-67).

"I was very pleased with how we played all week, but especially at this tournament," said head golf coach Bob Livingstone. "The guys are disappointed that we didn't get a victory up here, but they are determined to continue working hard and hopefully get a tournament title somewhere down the road. We had a great week with third place (at UOP) and second place finishes (at OSU). Combining the two tournaments we beat everybody head-to-head, except UCI, which threw an unbelieveable score at us today."

The 49ers will next be in action on October 10-11 when they compete in the Fresno Lexus Classic at Belmont Country Club in Fresno.
