49ers Split East Coast Swing, Lose at UConn STORRS, CT-- The No. 7-ranked University of Connecticut (4-1-2) proved why it is one of the top teams in the country, defeating visiting Long Beach State (3-5-0) 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the 49ers' school-record, three-match win streak. LBSU split its East Coast swing, winning 3-1 at Hartford on Friday. The 49er defense had allowed just two goals over its previous four matches. UConn scored four times in the first half to lead 4-0. The Beach held serve over the first 15 minutes, as Jessica Gjertsten scored the first of two first half goals, at 14:50 taking a pass from Kristen Graczyk to give UConn a 1-0 lead. Gjertsten scored again at 25:01 heading a pass from Meghan Schnur, before the Huskies went back to work 27 seconds later, as Graczyk returned the favor from Gjertsten, taking a pass from Gjersten and scoring from five yards out to make it 3-0. UConn made it 4-0 at 38:12 as Brittany Barakat beat the defense and fired a shot past a diving Tara Gotthardt (Pleasanton). Connecticut outshot LBSU 16 to 1 in the first half. UConn added a fifth goal at 85:25 as Elisa Pirinen to make it 5-0. The match marked a homecoming for former Huskie, Kaycee McElree, a current assistant with the 49ers. UConn has reached seven Final Fours over the last two decades. The 49ers return home next Saturday to take on Weber State at 1 p.m. |
