LBSU SWEEPS PENN STATE Touzinsky Named Tournament MVP
LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team cruised to an easy 3-0 victory over the No. 9 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, on Saturday night in the Asics/Active Ankle Beach Bash at The Pyramid. Game scores were 33-31, 30-25, 30-26.
Long Beach State improved to 14-7, while Penn State fell to 15-5. LBSU has now won six straight matches.
Tournament MVP Scott Touzinsky led all scorers with a match-high 21 kills for a .548 hitting percentage. The trio of Jeff Wootton, David Lee, and Robert Tarr all had nine kills each. Lee also added a team-best six blocks. As a team, LBSU hit .451 for the match, making it the fifth time in six matches that the 49ers have hit .400 or better. Setter Tyler Hildebrand chipped in with a match-high 49 assists. The Beach also limited its errors, only committing 13 for the entire match. Four players recorded double-digits in kills for the Nittany Lions, including Zach Slenker, who posted a team-best 13 kills. Norman Keil added 12 kills and six block assists. PSU hit just .288 as a team, and committed 23 attack errors.
The 49ers edged out a close 33-31 game one victory behind Touzinsky, who posted nine kills in the set. Wootton added six kills on seven attempts for a .714 attack percentage. Both LBSU and PSU hit exceptionally well, as The Beach tallied 22 kills for a .444 attack percentage, while Penn State netted 22 kills for a .441 percentage. Slenker had six kills in the frame for the Nittany Lions.
The 49ers started to pull away in the second frame, winning, 30-25. Touzinsky remained hot, registering seven more kills to raise his match total to 16. Penn State, however, cooled off, only posting a .194 hitting percentage (16-9-36). The 49ers would earn the sweep with a 30-26 game three victory.
LBSU travels to Pepperdine on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m.
