49ers Hold on to Defeat Cal Poly Beach Improves to 9-6 in Conference, Close Out Regular Season Next Week LONG BEACH, CA-- Glory Johnson led the 49ers (12-14, 9-6 Big West) with 25 points and 13 rebounds as Long Beach State women's basketball defeated visiting Cal Poly (9-15, 5-9 Big West) 75-65 at The Pyramid on Saturday night. The Mustangs stayed in the game converting 28-of-32 from the free throw line, despite shooting 27% and committing 25 turnovers. Johnson shot 10-of-15 from the field, while Lauren Bull had a career-night, scoring a career-best 18 points, to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Courtney Uphoff and Michelle Henke each had 16 points for Cal Poly, while Henke also had 10 rebounds. A steal and layup from Candice Wilson put the 49ers up 63-51 with 5:28 left after Cal Poly had closed to with three points.The 49ers used a 13-6 run over a four minute stretch to extend their lead into double digits. Michelle Henke's stutter step, driving layup cut the 49ers lead to 48-45 with 9:23 left. The Beach led 35-29 at the half, thanks to an 8-2 run midway through the first half. LBSU hit 40% from the field, while Cal Poly shot 22% and committed 11 turnovers.
Two straight jumpers by Lauren Bull put LBSU up 25-15 with 6:28 left, as The Beach converted three straight jumpers. The 49ers would used an 8-2 run to lead 27-15. Courtney Uphoff's driving layup with 8:25 left cut the LBSU lead to 19-15. Johnson's layup with 11:24 left The Beach up 15-10. LBSU suited up just eight players, as five players were unavailable-- Sarah Stout (left leg), Deja Belvins (RS-knee), Liz Sun (RS-knee) and Jayme Connors (RS-ankle) were all injured; while Jinga Gosschalk was suspended for one game for violating team rules. The 49ers close out the regular season next Thursday when they host UC Irvine at 7:30 p.m. The Big West Conference Tournament starts on March 12 at the Anaheim Convention Center. BOX SCORE |
