| BOYKIN TO BOSTON, 49ERS TO USC Serena Boykin Will Head to Boston to Compete in USATF Nationals, While the Track Team Travels to USC for Trojan Invite PDF RELEASE LONG BEACH, CA-- Junior Serena Boykin (Los Angeles, CA) will travel to Boston, MA this weekend to compete in the USATF Senior National Indoor Championships. Boykin is the sole qualifier from Long Beach this season and will compete on Suunday, March 2. Coach Sythe hopes that this meet will give Serena "national level exposure, and prepare her for future championships." Sythe also hopes that Boykin will hit the qualifying standard for the NCAA Indoor Championships which will be held on March 14-15 at the University of Arkansas. This will possibly be Boykin's last performance in a Long Beach uniform this season as she will redshirt the outdoor season.
The 49er track and field team will travel to USC this weekend to compete in the Trojan Invite. Joining Long Beach State and USC, will be Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Bakersfield, and several open athletes. The hammer will take place at West LA College at 9:00 am, while the remainder of the meet will begin at 11:00 am at USC.
Several track athletes will sit out this weekend to rest after competing at the indoor conference championships. Fresh off school-records in the indoor 5000m, both Terrance Wroblewski (Half Moon Bay, CA) and Jennifer Yadon (Lancaster, CA) will not compete. Hurdler Shingo Suzumura (Nagoya, Japan) will also sit out. A few athletes are still questionable for the meet due to injury, and their status will not be known until the end of the week. They inlcude Gladys Iwuaba (San Diego, CA) and Shannon Daniels (Upland, CA).
Coach Sythe's Expectations for the Meet: "We are using this meet as an opportunity to work on several things. This is our first weekend to qualify for the conference championships as well as the NCAA Regionals, and expect several of those marks to happen at USC. This will be a long season for us and we are preparing for meets down the road." |
