TITANS DEFEAT 49ERS 77-74 Technical Foul by LBSU's Johnson Gives Fullerton the Win FEBRUARY 13, 2003 LONG BEACH, CA— Cal State Fullerton (6-15, 4-5 Big West) defeated Long Beach State (10-11, 7-3 Big West) 77-74 in conference play at The Pyramid Thursday night. Fullerton capitalized on a personal and technical foul by LBSU's Glory Johnson with 4.1 seconds remaining, to go on to win, as a last second shot by Jinga Gosschalk failed to connect. Amber Pruitt drove to the basket and was fouled by Johnson with 4.1 seconds left. Johnson was than assessed a technical foul for slamming the ball. Rochelle Ortega made both technical free throws, before Pruitt made one-of-two free throws to make it 77-74. LBSU then went the lenghth of the court and was unable to get a clean shot. Glory Johnson led The Beach with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Candice Wilson added 18 points. Jinga Gosschalk and Jennifer Baker each chipped in 10 points apiece. The Beach shot 44% from the field and committed 29 turnovers. Heather Hansen led the Titans with 17 points, while Andrea Adams chipped in 14. CSUF shot 43% for the game and committed 29 turnovers. With 11.8 seconds remaining in the game, a lay-up by LBSU's Jennifer Baker tied the game at 74-74. Long Beach took their first lead since the early minutes of the first half, 60-58, after two free throws by Candice Wilson with 6:59 remaining. Fullerton retook the lead, 65-64, after a three-point play by Andrea Adams with 4:48 left to play. Long Beach began the second half strong, using an 11-4 run to bring the score within three points, 46-43, with 15:43 remaining. A driving lay-up by CeCe Rush with 10:15 remaining tied the game at 53-53.
The 49ers struggled in the first half as the Titans went on a 22-6 run to lead 28-16 with 8:08 left. Fullerton led by 14, 32-18, with 5:36 remaining to give CSUF their biggest lead of the half. Long Beach went into the locker room down 42-32. The Beach committed 19 turnovers and shot 46%, while Fullerton turned the ball over 11 times and shot 42% for the half. Long Beach State will next be in action as they take on Idaho at The Pyramid Saturday, February 15 at 7:30 pm. BOX SCORE
