NAU Comes back on New Orleans in Beach Classic

NAU Comes Back to Defeat New Orleans LONG BEACH, CA-- Alyssa Wahl led a personal 8-2 run midway through the second half, leading Northern Arizona (5-2) to a 63-58 win over New Orleans (3-3) in the second game of the 16th Beach Classic. Wahl scored 13 second half points and 19 points and seven rebounds for the contest as NAU benefited from shooting 25-of-37 from the charity stripe, including 16 second half makes. Alexis Rhodes added 13 points, while Vanessa Campillo and Lacy Toblert had 10 points a piece. NAU shot 39% for the game. New Orleans was led by Jasmine Smiri's 15 points and three, three-pointers and Jeannette Jimenez' 11 points, both off the bench. UNO shot 35% for the contest. The UNO's five starters combined for just 23 points. Wahl's three-pointer followed by a layup at 9:03, gave NAU its first lead of the game, at 48-46, as Wahl went on a personal 8-2 run. NAU pulled close with eight points off of free throws over the a three minute stretch from 14:27 to 11:48. A Vanessa Campillo layup at 5:09 gave the Lumberjacks a 56-48 lead, capping an 18-5 run. After a hot start, New Orleans was outscored 24-14 over the final 13 minutes of the first half, to hold onto a slim 31-28 halftime lead. NAU shot 38% in the first half, while UNO hit 36% of its shots. NAU crept back into the game, as two free throw by Tolbert cut the lead to 31-28 with 20 seconds left after a three-pointer by Natalie Metz cut the Privateer lead to 29-25 with 2:37 left. Two free throws by Wahl cut the UNO lead to 20-12 with 9:12 left, capping a 12-6 run by the Lumberjacks. Two straight three-pointers by UNO's Jasmine Smiri ignited a hot start for the Privateers, putting them up 16-4 with 12:48 left, forcing a Northern Arizona timeout. The final contest of the 16th Beach Classic will be on Saturday at 5 p.m.between New Orleans and Long Beach State. The game will be a doubleheader with the 49er men's team, who will play Southern Utah at 7:30 p.m. at The Pyramid. |
