49ers Picked 3rd in Pre-Season Poll

Big West Media Day Makes Its Selections IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State women's basketball is picked to finish third in the Big West, while the men's team is slated 10th, according to the coaches and the media following the Big West Media Day at the Irvine Marriott on Wednesday morning. The 49er women received 61 points in the coaches poll and 137 points in the media poll. No. 18-ranked UC Santa Barbara was picked to repeat as conference champion. UCSB has won the previous eight consecutive Big West Championships. Mary Hegarty is in her first year at Long Beach State, as the team finished 14-15 last year. The 49er women host two exhibitions before opening the regular season on November 21 at New Mexico State, the Play Mode All-Stars this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and November 15 against Love and Basketball at 3 p.m. The 49er men were picked to finish 10th in both the coaches and the media pre-season polls. UCSB was picked to win the conference in both polls. The Beach, who finished 5-22 in 2002-03, are led by second year Head Coach Larry Reynolds. The men's team will host two exhibitions, CS San Bernardino on Wednesday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. and the Olympic Club on November 16 at 1 p.m. LBSU opens its season on the road at San Diego State on November 21.
