Bull Lifts Beach to Victory

Bull Leads Offense Down the Stretch in Victory LONG BEACH, CA--Senior Lauren Bull scored nine points in the final four minutes of play to lift the Long Beach State women's basketball team (1-1) over Eastern Washington (1-1) 74-66 in its home opener Sunday at The Pyramid. Bull went on her own 7-0 run to give the 49ers a 63-61 lead with 2:39 left in the game. She hit a three-pointer at 3:41, followed by a steal and a lay-up, and then another steal and a lay-up triggered by point guard Crystal McCutcheon to give The Beach a two-point advantage. With just 35 seconds remaining in the game, EWU's Kathleen Nygaard missed a crucial lay-up with Long Beach leading 70-65. Nygaard had made two lay-ups over the previous two minutes. McCutcheon led The Beach with 21 points, while Jayme Connors and Petra Gläser each chipped in 15 points each. The 49ers shot 43% from the field. Nygaard led the Eagles with 14 points, while Felice Moore and Stephanie Ulmer added 13 and 17 points respectively. EWU shot 37% from the field and committed 27 turnovers. Ulmer's three-pointer with 12:45 remaining pushed the Eagles lead to 53-42, giving EWU their largest lead of the game. Long Beach came back strong using an 11-2 run to bring the score within three, 55-52, with less then eight minutes remaining. The Eagles went on their own 6-0 run to push the score to 61-53 with under five minutes remaining after a lay-up by Raelynn Chaffee. Eastern Washington went into the halftime break up 41-33, keyed by the Eagles shooting 18-of-20 (90%) from the free throw line. The Beach got into foul trouble early with Conners and Christina Mack picking up three fouls a piece, while Jennifer Baker, Candice Wilson, and Cynetha Rush were each called for two. Women's basketball will next be in action when they travel to Colorado State for the Coors Rocky Mountain Invite next Friday and Saturday. |
