LONG BEACH HOLDS ON TO DEFEAT PACIFIC The Beach Improve to 5-0 in Big West Play With 60-55 Victory
LONG BEACH, CA— Pacific's Gillian d'Hondt was called for a traveling violation with 8.2 seconds left as Long Beach State (8-8, 5-0 Big West) held on to defeat Pacific ( 5-12, 2-4 Big West) 60-55 Saturday night at The Pyramid. The 49ers were up by just two, 57-55, when the violation occurred.
Glory Johnson led The Beach with 16 points, while Jinga Gosschalk and Candice Wilson each added 14 of their own. Jennifer Baker had a career-high seven steals and seven rebounds.
D'Hondt led the Tigers with 23 points, while Nancy Dinges chipped in 15. Pacific shot 38% for the game, while LBSU shot 41%.
Long Beach led 54-49 with 3:25 remaining, but Pacific battled back to close to within 57-55 on a layup by d'Hondt with 51 seconds left.
Pacific used an 11-5 run to close to within three with under seven minutes left. LBSU's CeCe Rush was charged with a technical foul after a made basket by Pacific's d'Hondt. D'Hondt proceeded to make 2-of-3 free throws to bring it to within 47-42 with 7:47 remaining. A driving layup by Mischa Clark brought the Tigers to within three points, 47-44, with 6:30 left to play.
After UOP's bench was charged with a technical foul for arguing an offensive foul, Jinga Gosschalk hit one-of-two free throws to give the Beach ten unanswered points and a 35-26 lead with 15: 28 left.
The Tigers went into the locker room up by two, 25-23, after a two-point basket by Alissa Tarsiuk. UOP shot 34% for the half, while LBSU shot 31%. Pacific used a 9-0 run capped off by a three-pointer by Nancy Dinges to take an 18-11 lead with 7:45 remaining in the first half. Long Beach battled back with a 12-4 run to reclaim the lead, 23-22, with 3:40 left.
Long Beach State will head up the central coast next weekend to take on Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The 49ers will take on the Mustangs on Thursday, January 30 at 7:00 pm and the Gauchos on Saturday, February 1 at 7:00 pm. BOXSCORE |
