NINERS OLE MATADORS The 49ers Remain Atop the Big West Standings With 72-59 Victory LONG BEACH, CA— Long Beach State (7-8, 4-0 Big West) defeated visiting Cal State Northridge (1-16, 1-5 Big West) 72-59 in a conference match Thursday night at The Pyramid. Three 49ers scored in double digits as The Beach remained undefeated in conference play, and stayed atop the Big West standings. This is the first time since the 1991-1992 season that The Beach has opened up conference play 4-0. That team went 5-0 before falling to UC Santa Barbara. Glory Johnson and Candice Wilson led The Beach with 18 points, while Jennifer Baker added 14 of her own for a new career-high. Ofa Tulikihihifo led the Matadors with 17 points, while Kristin Anderson added 15 points. Northridge committed 28 turnovers, while Long Beach had only 17. The Matadors picked up 49 boards, with The Beach only grabbing 33. LBSU shot 46% from the field and Northridge shot 38% from the field. With a backcourt turnover by Northridge, Baker's lay-up with 15:40 remaining pushed The Beach's lead to 41-32 after Northridge closed to 35-32 on a three-point play by Gildersleeve. LBSU dominated the second-half, holding to an eight to ten point lead. Long Beach State had 22 points in the paint, while Northridge had just eight to take a first half lead of 31-25. The 49ers forced 13 Matadors turnovers and held CSUN to 40% shooting. LBSU shot 48% for the half. Long Beach State will next be in action as they take on Pacific Saturday at 7:30 pm in The Pyramid.
