| NINERS HEAD TO IDAHO, TRY TO GET TO 3-0 PDF FILE FULL 2002-03 SCHEDULE RECORD: 5-8 BIG WEST: 2-0 HOME: 3-4, AWAY: 2-3, NEUTRAL: 0-1
49ERS TRAVEL TO IDAHO THIS WEDNESDAY FOR ONLY CONTEST The Beach (5-8, 2-0 BWC), are beginning to show its not how you start, but how you finish, as they are undefeated in conference player after a 3-8 start. The 49ers will travel to Idaho (4-10, 2-2 BWC) on Wednesday for a game at 7 p.m. for their only game this week. LBSU, who have been playing without starting center Jayme Connors' 11.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, due to a season-ending ankle injury, finally are seeing production out of other players on a consistent basis. While senior F Glory Johnson continues to lead the Big West in scoring with a 16.1 ppg clip, both G Jinga Gosschalk (16.0 ppg vs. the BWC) and G Candice Wilson (13.5 ppg) have given the 49ers that second and third option.
RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 111-105 in her seven-plus years, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons.
STARTING TO FIND THE GROOVE Since The Beach lost starting center Jayme Connors (ankle) for the season in mid-December, the 49ers have been looking for that second and third scoring option to compliment Big West leading scorer Glory Johnson. If the first two BWC games are any indication, sophomore G Candice Wilson (Sacramento) and senior G Jinga Gosschalk (Holland) may be the answers. Gosschalk is averaging 16.0 points per game, while Wilson is chipping in 13.5 ppg, leading LBSU to a 2-0 record. In the previous six games, without Connors, the team was 1-4, with no player, besides Johnson, averaging over seven points per game.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE LEAGUE MAKES Since starting league play, LBSU is averaging 71.5 points per game, shooting 45% and out rebounding their opponents by nearly 14 rebounds per game (43.5 to 30.0). From the time Connors was injured until the last non-conference game with USF, The Beach were 1-4, averaging 58.8 points per game, shooting 37% and being out rebounded 44.0 to 38.0.
SLOW START, BIG FINISHES Its not how you start, but how you finish. Traditionally slow starters, in each of Dallas Bolla's eight seasons, the team has never started its first 10 games with a winning record, BUT, they have finished with a winning record in five of her first seven seasons, including the last four. 1998-99: Start: 5-5, Finish: 13-6, Overall: 18-11 1999-00: Start: 5-5, Finish: 17-6, Overall: 22-11 2000-01: Start: 3-7, Finish: 14-6, Overall: 17-13 2001-02: Start: 3-7, Finish: 13-6, Overall: 16-13 2002-03: Start: 3-7, So Far: 2-1

Glory Johnson added 16 points, eight boards and three blocks. Crystal Harris led four players in double figures with 17 points and eight rebounds.
JANUARY 5 | LBSU 64, UCI 50 LBSU 30-34--64 (Johnson 20 pts, Team: 42%) UCI 29-21--50 (Yadon 21 pts, Team: 31%) Using a 19-4 run midway through the second half, The Beach opened up conference play with a victory. LBSU scored at will in the paint, downing 34 points, while taking advantage of nearly every opportunity, scoring 17 second chance points. The 49ers out rebounded UCI 47-to-28, grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. The bench chipped in 24 points, as Jinga Gosschalk scored 11 point and had seven rebounds. LBSU's lead hit double digits with 7:40 left, as the 49ers never looked back.
HOW ABOUT 3-AND-0? In Dallas Bolla's eight seasons, LBSU has gone 2-0 to start league play three times, (1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03) . They have started out 3-0 once, in 2000-01. The last time The Beach went unblemished after four and five games was back in 1991-92, under Glenn McDonald. McDonald's team went 5-0 before falling to UCSB.
JINGA FINDS THE MARK Jinga Gosschalk (Amsterdam, Holland) set her career-high with 21 points over UC Riverside on January 9, hitting five three-pointers in the process. The senior sharpshooter, who has had a slow start (5.8 points per game in non-BWC contests) is averaging 16.0 points per game, while shooting 8-of-16 three-pointers against the Big West.
CONSISTENT AS EVER Senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) continues to lead the Big West in scoring, after a typical, 16 points and eight rebound performance over the Highlanders on January 9. Johnson has reached double digits in every game since the opener versus USD (six points, five rebounds), and grabbed at least six rebounds in each of the last 12 contests. Johnson is averaging 16.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, ranking amongst BWC leaders in scoring, rebounding, blocks, and shooting (field goal and free throw).
WILSON REBOUNDS WITH CAREER-HIGH Sophomore guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento) broke out of her scoring slump with a career-best 19 points and eight assists against UCR. Wilson had been held without a double digit game for the previous five games. Wilson began the season scoring in double digits in six of the first seven games. Wilson is averaging 10.0 points and 4.7 assists per game, both amongst the Big West's best marks this season.
BAKING THE BOARDS Junior Jennifer Baker (Riverdale, MD) has grabbed at least five rebounds in each of her last six games. Over the last six games, Baker is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, grabbing eight rebounds three times and 10 at LMU in mid-December. Over the last seven games, Baker is averaging 7.7 points per game. On the year, Baker is ninth in the Big West with 5.8 rebounds per game.
NO BULL ABOUT IT Lauren Bull (Rockford, IL) is beginning to heat up, scoring eight points versus USF, followed by five points at Irvine and six against UCR. Bull had scored just 14 points over her previous seven games. Bull is averaging 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game this year.
CONNORS LIKELY TO REDSHIRT SEASON Sophomore Jayme Connors, (Las Vegas, NV), who was averaging 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, will wear a "Cam Boot" on her left ankle for the next three to six weeks, starting in mid-December, to heal tendinitis. The ankle, which is fractured, will then be diagnosed and repaired. A member of the 2002 Big West All-Freshman Team, Connors was coming off a career-best 24 points at Stetson, and had started all six games this season, enough to receive a medical redshirt.
SUN BEGINS TO SHINE, AGAIN Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA), suffered an ACL injury last spring while in high school, and has begun to practice with the team starting in January.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaeser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines.
SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee University (TN) as a freshman.
