Nine Meet Records Set as Beach Win 17 Events
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State track and field swept both the men’s and women’s team titles at the Big West Challenge Cup on Saturday, as nine meet records fell, five of them by LBSU athletes. In all, The Beach won seven women’s events and 10 men’s events against conference foes UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and CS Fullerton in the 10th annual quadrangular meet.
Gladys Iwuaba (San Diego) not only won the triple jump, but broke both the school and meet record. Iwuaba’s jump of 40’4.75”, broke Chandra Roberts’ 18 year old school-record of 40’2.5”set in 1984. LBSU’s Serena Boykin (Los Angeles) set the meet record in the shot put (45’8.00”) while Stephanie Samson (Yorba Linda) set the meet record in the hammer (166’2”). Irvine’s Lauren Adams set the meet record in the 400m (56.01) while teammate Tessa Cendejas set the meet record in the 1500m (2:12.61).
On the men’s side, 49er Jon O’Neil (Fontana Valley) set meet records in the shot put (62’3.25”) and discus (189’3.00”), while Fullerton’s Brandon Campbell and Edmund Pula set meet records in the high jump (6’11.75”) and hammer (180’7.00”), respectively.
Multiple winners from today included: UCSB’s Jasmine Washington (100m, 200m), UC Irvine’s Tessa Cendejas (800m, 1500m), LBSU’s Stephanie Sampson (hammer, discus), Rashaad Johnson (200m, 400m), Jimmy Camilo (110m hurdles, pole vault) Jon O’Neil (shot, discus) and CS Fullerton’s Brandon Campbell (high jump, long jump)
The Beach women finished with 187 points , followed by Irvine (183), Fullerton (138) and Santa Barbara (129). The men finished with 208 points, followed by CS Fullerton (170), UCSB (149) and Irvine (117).
