For Second Time in Week, Beach Score Double Digits in an Inning April 30, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA-- In a span of 19 years, Long Beach State scored double digits in an inning, twice. It took six days for the 2002 version to do it as the No. 26-ranked Dirtbags (27-12) scored 11 runs in the third on their way to an 19-9 victory over host Loyola Marymount (17-28). When The Beach scored 10 runs in the first inning last Wednesday against San Diego, it was believed to be the third time in school history that The Beach hit double digits in an inning, following a 17-run outburst in seventh at Nevada on April 17, 1998, and a 13-run inning in 1979 against San Diego. On Tuesday, at Loyola Marymount, LBSU sent 15 men to the plate in the third, scoring 11 times off of seven hits, two walks an a hit by pitch. Two of those hits were two-run homers by Paul McAnulty (his fifth) and Chris Genung (his first). McAnulty, who went 2-for-4 on the day, drove in all four of his runs in the third, with a homer, followed by a two-run single. In the game, only the first inning went completely scoreless, as The Beach scored in every inning but the first and ninth, while LMU scored in every inning but the first and second. Nick Covarrubias went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Genung and Nick Orlandos had three hits a piece. Every starter had at least one hit. Jeremy Reed became the last starter to get a hit, with a solo homer with one out in the sixth. RHP Daniel Eisentrager (7-3) went a pre-determined 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits. Scott Sarver (0-2) who pitched the first inning and gave up two runs took the loss. The Beach gave up a season-high 19 hits, as Chris Zacuto went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a triple, while Joshua Whitesell and Christian Campos added three hits a piece. Chris Wright, with a two-run double in the second and a single in the seventh, tied Chuck Lopez's career-record for hits with 245. LBSU heads to Cal Poly this weekend for a three game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. BOX SCORE |
