Staff Strikes Ties School-Record with 17 Punchouts March 8, 2002 LONG BEACH, CA-- Abe Alvarez struck out a career-best 13, while Neil Jamison added three knockouts and Chris Demaria closed out the contest with one, as the No. 30-ranked Long Beach State (8-6) pitching staff tied a school-record on their way to a 4-0 victory over No. 27-ranked Arizona (17-5). The staff gave up just four hits, while striking out 17, tying the 2001 staff, who struck out 17 back on April 3, 2001. Alvarez (4-0) pitched the first 7.0 innings, giving up three hits, while Jamison gave up one and Demaria retired the Wildcats in order in the ninth.Kevin Randel went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Nick Orlandos went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Back on April 3, Demaria struck out eight in 3.0 innings of work at Blair Field. Sean Rierson (4-2) took the loss, tossing the first 7.0 innings, giving up all 11 hits and four runs, walking three and striking out three.
