BEACH HOST USF IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME, JAN. 2, AT UCI TO OPEN BIG WEST The 49ers (3-7, 0-0 BWC) will play their final non-conference game on January 2 at The Pyramid, by hosting the University of San Francisco (3-9) at 7:30 p.m. The Beach will then travel down I-405 for a matchup with the Anteaters (7-3, 0-0 BWC, host USF on Friday) in Irvine, on Sunday at 2 p.m. LBSU is coming off a 76-54 loss at Northern Arizona on Saturday. Senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ), after scoring 15 points in her homecoming, continues to be an early season candidate for BWC Player of the Year, ranking amongst the conference leaders in scoring (15.6), rebounding (9.4), shooting (49% FG, 78% FT), and blocks (1.3). JANUARY 2 | SAN FRANCISCO (3-9) NOTES: Wins over Nevada (57-46) and Seton Hall (62-44)... play at UW-Milwaukee on Dec. 28 and at Wisconsin on Dec. 30... lost to No. 6 Stanford 59-57 and No. 19 BYU 68-65... LBSU game will be their fourth game of a nine-game road trip from December 20 to January 18... coming off 70-67 OT win at Wisconsin, snapping seven-game losing skid... Head Coach Mary Hile-Nepfel began her coaching career as an assistant with The Beach from 1982-85... JANUARY 5 | AT UC IRVINE (7-3) NOTES: Coming off an 86-64 win over Portland State... will host USF on Friday before opening Big West play on Sunday... have won four of their last six... wins have been over San Diego and San Diego State, while losses have been at LMU (50-47), Creighton and Kent State... junior forward Christina Callaway (13.8 ppg) and senior forward Wendy Gabbe (12.8 ppg) lead the club in scoring... Callaway also leads the Big West in rebounding (9.8 rpg)... the team is shooting 35% from three, with Gabbe (42%), Lisa Faulkner (35%) and Kristen Green (31%) lead the way.
RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 109-104 over the previous seven seasons, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons.
SLOW START, BIG FINISHES Its not how you start, but how you finish. DECEMBER 28 | @NAU 76, LBSU 54 LBSU 28-36--54 (John/Mack 15 pts, Team: 35%) NAU 39-37--76 (Rhodes/Snitker 16 pts, Tm: 53%) The Lumberjacks forced 30 LBSU turnovers (leading to 29 points), shot 53%, and used a late first half run to put the ball game away. Christina Mack, returned to home state with a career-best 15 points, as her three with four minutes left in the first half, closed the deficit to within 24-23, before the Lumberjacks went on a 15-5 run to close the half. Another Arizona native, Glory Johnson, also had 15 points.
STOMPING PAST HER OPPONENTS Senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) scored 15 points before her home state on Saturday, after averaging 23.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game at The Beach Classic the weekend before. Johnson poured in a career-best 27 points against Mercer in the consolation bracket, grabbing 13 rebounds each night. Johnson currently leads the club and the Big West with 15.6 points per game. Her 9.4 rebounds per game ranks second, while her 78% free throw shooting is sixth in the BWC. Her four double-doubles on the season, is tied for the Big West lead.
STEALING HER WAY TO THE TOP Sophomore Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) leads the conference and ranks 15th in the nation in steals, grabbing 32 over her first seven games for a 3.2 per game average. Wilson is one of only three Big West players to rank amongst the nation's leaders, in any category.
DISHING THEM OUT Sophomore Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) is averaging 3.8 assists per game over her last four contests, including six against Mercer, two games before. On the year, Wilson is second on the team with 10.0 points per game, and amongst the second in the Big West with 4.7 assists per game.
QUAN CONTINUES TO SHINE Freshman Monica Quan (Walnut, CA) in her first start of the season versus Belmont on December 20, nearly doubled her season total, scoring a career-best 14 points and adding a career-best five assists. The totals crushed her SEASON TOTALS of nine points and seven assists. Quan backed up that performance with eight points versus Mercer and five points at NAU. Quan, since starting versus Belmont, is averaging 9.0 points and 2.3 assists per game. Quan entered the season as a backup to guards Candice Wilson and Christina Mack and played just 13 minutes over the first five games.
GRABBING THE BOARDS Junior Jennifer Baker (Riverdale, MD) is averaging 8.7 rebounds per game over her last three contests, grabbing a career-best 10 boards at LMU, before grabbing eight more against Mercer and at NAU. Baker also set her career-high scoring with 13 points against Mercer. On the year, Baker is averaging 6.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
C-MACK ATTACK Sophomore Christina Mack (Glendale, AZ) is averaging 12.5 points per game over her last two contests, after tallying a career-best 15 in her native Arizona on Saturday. Mack started the season strong with back-to-back double-digit games, before scoring just 12 points over the next five games. Mack then followed that up with 10 versus Mercer and 15 at NAU.
RUSH BACK AT IT CeCe Rush (Pontiac, MI) returned to the LBSU lineup on Saturday, grabbing four rebounds in 20 minutes of work after missing the Beach Classic with her second concussion. Before the second concussion, Rush picked up a career-high 11 rebounds at LMU on December 14.
CONNORS LIKELY TO REDSHIRT SEASON Sophomore Jayme Connors, (Las Vegas, NV), who was averaging 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, will wear a "Cam Boot" on her left ankle for the next three to six weeks, starting in mid-December, to heal tendinitis. The ankle will then be re-evaluated. It was originally diagnosed as a small fracture. A member of the 2002 Big West All-Freshman Team, Connors was coming off a career-best 24 points at Stetson, and had started all six games this season, enough to receive a medical redshirt.
SUN RE-INJURES KNEE Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA), who suffered an ACL injury in the spring, practiced with the team for the first time in mid-December, only to re-injure her knee. Sun was ahead of schedule, before the injury.
AMONGST THE BIG WEST LBSU is fourth in scoring (61.9) and seventh in defense (69.4)... they rank second in rebounding (42.4) and last in three-point shooting (.261)... the 49ers lead the Big West in three-point defense (.318)... Glory Johnson leads the Big West in scoring (15.6), is second in rebounding (9.4), fourth in blocks (1.3), sixth in free throw shooting (.784) and third in shooting (.483)... Candice Wilson ranks first in steals (3.2) and second in assists (4.7).
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaeser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines.
SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee University (TN) as a freshman. |
