| BEACH FALLS AT NAU, 76-54 December 28, 2002
FLAGSTAFF, AZ-- Using an array of breakaway layups and fastbreak points, Northern Arizona (6-4) defeated visiting Long Beach State (3-7) 76-54 on Saturday night at the Walkup Skydome. NAU took advantage of its opportunites, causing 30 Beach turnovers, while shooting 53% from the field. Arizona natives Glory Johnson (Phoenix) and Christina Mack (Glendale) led The Beach with 15 points a piece. The Lumberjacks had three players reach double digits, led by Alexis Rhodes and Jen Snitker's 16 points a piece. Lacey Tolbert added 13 points. LBSU shot just 35% for the game, after shooting 46% in the first half. The Lumberjacks outscored LBSU 29-13 off of turnovers tonight. The Lumberjacks continued to fastbreak in the second half, as Joy Dixon's layup off a bounce pass led to a 51-35 lead for NAU with 13:40 left. NAU went on a 15-5 run to end the half, paced by two fastbreak layups with 14 seconds left, to lead 39-28. Joy Dixon's three-point play with 14.4 seconds left gave NAU a 37-28 lead, followed by another fastbreak layup, this time by Lacy Tolberts, seconds later, off a 49er turnover, to make it 39-28. Northern Arizona shot 49% in the first half, compared to LBSU's 46%.
Snitker's fadeway, two of 12 first half points, a 10-footer from the baseline with 2:45 left, gave the Lumberjacks a 30-25 lead. LBSU would score just five points over the final 4:23, as NAU went on a 15-5 run. NAU went up 17-12 with 11:42 to go, as Alexis Rhodes pick up her own miss and laid it in for two of her first 11 points. Christina Mack's three-pointer from the corner, closed the deficit to 24-23 with 4:23 left before NAU's 15-5 run. The Beach returns home on January 2, when they host the University of San Francisco at 7:30 pm at The Pyramid.
