The Beach (3-6) will close out their non-conference schedule over the next week, playing at Northern Arizona (5-4) on Saturday, December 28 at 6 p.m. PDT, before hosting the University of San Francisco (2-8 as of 12/27) right after New Year's on January 2 at The Pyramid. The 49ers will open the Big West schedule on the road at UC Irvine on Sunday, January 5 at 2 p.m. LBSU is coming off a third place finish at the 15th annual Beach Classic, and will play the rest of the season without starting center Jayme Connors (ankle), who was averaging 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 109-103 over the previous seven seasons, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons.
LBSU (3-6) NOTES: Wins at Stetson (71-67 in OT) at home versus New Mexico State (78-67) and Mercer (77-68), three point loss to Florida (72-69)... playing without starting center Jayme Connors (ankle) for the season... DECEMBER 21 | LBSU 77, MERCER 68 Beach Classic MER 28-40--68 (Zimmerman, 11 pts, Team: 35%) LBSU 34-43--77 (Johnson, 27 pts, Team: 46%) The 49ers finished third at their own Beach Classic, defeating winless Mercer, 77-68. Glory Johnson went off for a career-best 27 points, and added 13 rebounds, on 8-of-16 shooting, while hitting 11-of-12 free throws. Jennifer Baker added a career-best 13 points and eight rebounds, while Christina Mack rebounded with 10 points and three assists off the bench. LBSU shot an imprsssive 60% in the second half, limiting Mercer to 32% shooting over the same stretch.
DECEMBER 20 | BELMONT 76, LBSU 66 Beach Classic BEL 23-53--76 (Davenport, 34 pts, Team: 38%) LBSU 31-35--66 (Johnson, 19 pts, Team: 41%) Despite outshooting the eventual Beach Classic Champion Bruins, 41% to 38%, LBSU couldnt stop soon-to-be Tournament MVP Erica Davenport, who tied a LBSU Tournament record with 34 points, on 8-of-9 shooting. Davenport hit all five her threes and 13-of-14 free throws, scoring 30 in the second half to erase a 31-23 halftime lead by The Beach. LBSUs Glory Johnson record a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Monica Quan scored a career-best 14 points and five assists, while Denise Hagen hit for a career-high 13 points.
DOUBLE THE TROUBLE Senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) scored a career week at the Beach Classic, averaging 23.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, including a career-best 27 points against Mercer in the consolation bracket. Johnson grabbed 13 rebounds each night, as she produced double-doubles both nights. Johnson currently leads the club and the Big West with 15.7 points per game. Her 9.8 rebounds per game ranks third-best, while her 81% free throw shooing is fourth in the BWC. Her four double-doubles on the season, is tied for the Big West lead.
STEALING HER WAY TO THE TOP Sophomore Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) leads the conference and ranks 15th in the nation in steals, grabbing 27 over her first seven games for a 3.9 per game average. Wilson is one of only three Big West players to rank amongst the nation's leaders, in any category.
DISHING THEM OUT Sophomore Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) is averaging 4.0 assists per game over her last four contests, including six in her last game against Mercer. On the year, Wilson is second on the team with 10.8 points per game, and amongst the Big West's top five in assists with 4.9 assists per game.
CONNORS LIKELY TO REDSHIRT SEASON Sophomore Jayme Connors, (Las Vegas, NV), who was averaging 11.2 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game, will wear a Cam Boot on her left ankle for the next three to six weeks, starting in mid-December, to heal tendinitis. The ankle will then be re-evaluated. It was originally diagnosed as a small fracture. A member of the 2002 Big West All-Freshman Team, was coming off a career-best 24 points at Stetson, and had started all six games this season, enough to receive a medical redshirt.
RUSH HELD OUT INDEFINATELY Another player added to the team's "injured reserve" is power forward CeCe Rush (Pontiac, MI). Rush suffered her second concussion of the season, during practice the week of December 16, and has been held out since then. Rush missed three games earlier this year, and was coming of a career-best 11 rebounds at LMU on December 14.
QUAN SCORES CAREER GAME Freshman Monica Quan (Walnut, CA) has made the most of her opportunies this season, nearly doubling her season totals, in one game versus Belmont. Quan scored a career-best 14 points and added a career-best five assists, crushing her season totals of nine points and seven assists. Quan backed it up the next night with eight points against Mercer. Over the last three games, Quan is averaging 9.0 points and 3.1 assists per game.
SUN RE-INJURES KNEE Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA), who suffered an ACL injury in the spring, practiced with the team for the first time in mid-December, only to re-injure her knee. Sun was ahead of schedule, before the injury.
GRABBING THE BOARDS Junior Jennifer Baker (Riverdale, MD) is averaging 9.0 rebounds per game over her last two contests, grabbing a career-best 10 at LMU, before grabbing eight more against Mercer. Baker also set her career-high with 13 against Mercer. On the year, Baker is averaging 6.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
AMONGST THE BIG WEST LBSU is fourth in scoring (62.8) and fifth in defense (68.7)... LBSU is second in three-point defense (33% by opponents) and second in rebounding (42.4)... LBSU is also second in steals (10.1)... Glory Johnson leads the conference in scoring (15.7), is sixth in field goal shooting (48%), third in rebounding (9.8) and third in blocks (1.5)... Candice Wilson is 15th in scroing (10.8), first in steals (3.4), and third in assists (4.9).
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines.
SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee Univeristy (TN) as a freshman. |
