49ERS HEAD TO SUNSHINE STATE Beach Play on the Road For the Next Three PDF FILE FULL 2002-03 SCHEDULE SUNSHINE, SUNSHINE -- 49ERS HEAD OUT ON THE ROAD LBSU (1-3) will head out on the road for the next three games, traveling to Deland, FL for the Stetson Hatter Tournament on Friday and Saturday before traveling to Loyola Marymount on December 14 in a doubleheader with the men's team. This weekend's tournament will be a homecoming for Orlando natives redshirt freshman center Sarah Stout and Head Coach Dallas Bolla, who played at Stetson and coached in the Orlando area. The 49ers will play Morehead State (3-0) on Friday at 5 p.m. PST and either Stetson (0-4) or Hofstra (2-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m. or 5 p.m. The Beach are coming off a 72-69 loss to Florida on Sunday.

DECEMBER 1 | #34 FLA 72, LBSU 69 FLA 39-33--72 (3 w/ 13 pts, Team: 35%) LBSU 34-35--69 (Wilson 16 pts, Team: 36%) The Beach opened up with a 16-2 lead on Florida and led for much of the first half, before the No. 34-ranked Gators came back to lead at the half. Niether team could manage more than a three-point lead, as the Gators went 16-of-21 from the line, compared to the 49ers 6-of-10 shooting. Candice Wilson nearly had a triple double with a career-best 16 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Glory Johnson added 14 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
NOVEMBER 27 | @EWU 62, LBSU 49 LBSU 18-31--49 (Johnson 19 pts, Team: 28%) EWU 27-35--62 (Nygaard 25 pts, Team: 38%) The 49ers struggled from the get go, falling behind 18-6 and shooting just 20% in the first half in their first road game of the season. LBSU did close to within 34-30 with 13:47 left, but EWU behind Kathleen Nygaard's 25 points and 10 rebounds prevailed. Glory Johnson scored 19 points and eight rebounds, while Jayme Connors grabbed 13 rebounds. LBSU hit just 1-of-17 from three-point range.
GLORY-IOUS TIMES Senior forward Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) is coming off a monster week in which she averaged 17.3 points and 10.3 rebounds while shooting 49% from the field. The week included two, 19-point games and a career-best 16 rebounds versus a much bigger Florida team.
WILLING HER WAY CLEAR Point guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) is the only 49er to score in double digits in each of the team's first four games. Three times this season, Wilson has set her career-highs, after doing it again against Florida on Sunday. Against the Gators, Wilson set career-bests in points (16) and rebounds (10) and tied her assist average (9), nearly picking up a triple double. Wilson averaged just 4.4 points and 2.8 assists in 2001-02.
REBOUNDING MACHINE Center Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV), the team's strongest player, is nearly averaging a double-double to start the year with 10.0 rebounds per game and 9.8 points per game. Connors has twice grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds this season versus USD and at EWU.
MACK SOLID AT GUARD Guard Christina Mack (Phoenix, AZ) equaled her career total for double digit games in the first two games of the season, when she had 11 versus USD and 10 versus New Mexico State. After being shutout at EWU, Mack scored seven against Florida.
ACHILLES HEAL AT THE LINE The 49ers achilles heal, might be their free throw shooting, currently at 49%. But it is getting better. Against USD, they shot 29%, before hitting 53% versus NMSU, 57% at EWU and 60% versus Florida.
STOUT COMPETITOR Redshirt freshman center Sarah Stout (Orlando, FL), the team's tallest player at 6-5, is beginning to use her height to her advantage. In limited minutes (10) at Eastern Washington, due to foul trouble Stout blocked two shots, grabbed two boards and picked up two points. She added another two points and a block versus Florida.
AMONGST THE BIG WEST The Beach lead the Big West in rebounding with 47.2 per game and three-point defense (.267) and are second with 5.0 three-pointers made per game... Glory Johnson is third in the league in scoring, second in blocks and fifth in rebounding... Candice Wilson leads the Big West in assists, second in steals and is sixth in scoring... Jayme Connors is second in the league in rebounding.
SHARP SHOOTERS Jinga Gosschalk (Amsterdam, Holland) and Lauren Bull (Rockford, IL) made up 70% of the team's three-pointers last season, as both return for the 2002-03 season. Gosschalk (pronounced Haws-hall-ik) shot 40% from beyond the arc, just missing out on ranking in the Big West's top-five, while Bull hit 30% of her three's. The duo has combined for 9-of-29 from beyond the arc this year.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
GLAESER BACK FROM GERMANY Six-foot six redshirt center Petra Glaeser (Amtsberg, Germany), a member of a couple of different A2 German National teams, was a member of the German National team and they tried to qualify for future Olympic consideration. Germany was fourth heading into their Pool, won two out of three, but due to three loses last year, were unable to move on to the European Championships.
READY TO TAKE CHARGE Post players senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) and sophomore Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) are expected to take charge this season, returning as the team's top two scorers. The two combined for 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game in their first seasons at The Beach. Connors was named to the Big West's All-Freshman Team in 2001-02.
EXPERIENCE AT GUARD Starting point guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento) and key reserve Christina Mack (Phoenix, AZ) give The Beach experience in the backcourt. Wilson started 23 games last year and averaged 4.4 points per game with 69 assists, while Mack appeared in all 29 games, averaging 10 minutes per contest.
HOW'S THE WEATHER UP THERE? The 49ers feature one of the taller teams in the conference with seven players over 6-foot. Redshirt freshman Sarah Stout (Orlando, FL), at 6-5, is the 49ers tallest player in 2002-03, joining Jayme Connors, Denise Hagen, CeCe Rush (6-3), Glory Johnson (6-2) and Lauren Bull (6-0). Petra Glaeser, at 6-6, will redshirt this season.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
SUN QUESTIONABLE Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA) suffered an ACL injury in the spring and is questionable for the season. Sun is ahead of schedule, according to early reports.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines.
SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee Univeristy (TN) as a freshman. |
