The Beach (2-4) will travel to Loyola Marymount (4-1) for a doubleheader with the the men's team at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday LBSU will return home for the 14th annual Beach Classic on December 20 and 21. The 49ers are coming off a split in Deland, FL, where LBSU lost by 28 to Morehead State before defeating host Stetson, and Head Coach Dallas Bolla's alma mater, by three in overtime. The Beach have lost three of their last four contests.

RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 108-101 over the previous seven seasons, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons.
DECEMBER 7 | LBSU 71, STETSON 67 OT Stetson Hatter Classic LBSU 28-31-12--71 (Connors 24 pts, Team: 41%) STET 27-32-08--67 (Garcia 23 pts, Team: 39%) The Beach finished third at the Stetson Hatter Classic, defeating host Stetson thanks to a perfect overtime (3-for-3 FG, 6-for-6 FT), giving Head Coach Dallas Bolla a win in her first meeting against her alma mater. Jayme Connors rebounded to score a career-high 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while all-tournament selection Glory Johnson had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Candice Wilson and Jennifer Baker added 10 points a piece. LBSU had battled back to tie it at 59-59, after Stetson used a late 16-2 run to lead 51-44 with eight minutes left.
DECEMBER 6 | MOREHEAD ST. 75, LBSU 47 Stetson Hatter Classic MSU 36-39--75 (Williams, 23 pts, Team: 45%) LBSU 20-27--47 (Johnson 11 pts, Team 29%) Cold shooting for the 49ers led to a 28-point loss to Morehead State in the opener of the Stetson Hatter Classic. The Lady Eagles led wire to wire, scoring thefirst six points of the ballgame. Jayme Connors, who was tripled team most of the night, scored just four points on 1-of-9 shooting, but did grab nine boards. Glory Johnson led with 11 points and seven rebounds. Deja Blevins earned her first career start the next night, after grabbing five rebounds and scoring six points in 10 minutes off the bench.
DECEMBER 1 | #34 FLA 72, LBSU 69 FLA 39-33--72 (3 w/ 13 pts, Team: 35%) LBSU 34-35--69 (Wilson 16 pts, Team: 36%) The Beach opened up with a 16-2 lead on Florida and led for much of the first half, before the No. 34-ranked Gators came back to lead at the half. Niether team could manage more than a three-point lead, as the Gators went 16-of-21 from the line, compared to the 49ers 6-of-10 shooting. Candice Wilson nearly had a triple double with a career-best 16 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, while Glory Johnson added 14 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
JOHNSON NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT Senior forward Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) was named to the Stetson Hatter Classic All-Tournament team, after leading The Beach with 11 points against tournament champion Morehead State, and scoring a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench versus host Stetson.
BACK WITH AUTHORITY Sophomore center Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) scored a career-best 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting against Stetson, after going 1-of-9 from the field against numerous double and triple teams the previous night versus Morhead State. EYING THOSE DOUBLE-DOUBLES (AND WE DON'T MEAN IN N OUT) Posts Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) and Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) are each averaging close to a double-double this season, making for quite a lethal 1-2 punch. Johnson leads the club in scoring (13.8) and rebounding (9.2), while Connors is close behind wiht 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Each has led the team in rebounding in three games, while Johnson has led LBSU in scoring three times.
SHAKE AND BAKE Junior Jennifer Baker (Riverdale, MD) stands at 5-9, but if you had to guess who led the club in blocks over the weekend, the smart money would be on one of the team's seven TALLER players. Well, you would have lost. Baker, with two blocks each night, led the club in blocks and is currently second on the team with four blocks. Glory Johnson, at 6-3, leads with eight blocks. Baker is coming off a season-high 10 points versus Stetson.
STEALING PAST THE COMPETITION Sophomore guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento, CA) leads the Big West in steals (3.83) and is second in assists (5.33). Wilson, who has led LBSU in scoring twice this season, nearly had a triple-double against No. 34-ranked Florida, missing the mark by one assist. Wilson is averaging 12.0 points per game, second on the team. Wilson averaged just 4.4 points per game last year
JOHNSON HEATING UP Forward Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) is averaging 15.4 points and 10.0 rebounds after scoring just six points in the opener. Also, after not picking up a single double-double last season, the former JUCO transfer has already grabbed two this season. Johnson is third in the Big West in scoring (13.8), and rebounding (9.2) and fourth in blocks (1.3). On the year, Johnson is averaging 13.8 points and shooting 50% from the field.
AMONGST THE BIG WEST LBSU is third in the Big West in scoring (62.0) and sixth in defense (69.3)... second in three-point defense (.326), rebounding (44.2) and steals (10.0)... Johnson is third in scoring, fourth in field goal percentage, third in rebounding and fourth in blocks... Wilson is tied for 11th in scoring, second in assists and fist in steals... Connors is seventh in field goal shooting, and fourth in rebounding.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
GLAESER BACK FROM GERMANY Six-foot six redshirt center Petra Glaeser (Amtsberg, Germany), a member of a couple of different A2 German National teams, was a member of the German National team and they tried to qualify for future Olympic consideration. Germany was fourth heading into their Pool, won two out of three, but due to three loses last year, were unable to move on to the European Championships.
HOW'S THE WEATHER UP THERE? The 49ers feature one of the taller teams in the conference with seven players over 6-foot. Redshirt freshman Sarah Stout (Orlando, FL), at 6-5, is the 49ers tallest player in 2002-03, joining Jayme Connors, Denise Hagen, CeCe Rush (6-3), Glory Johnson (6-2) and Lauren Bull (6-0). Petra Glaeser, at 6-6, will redshirt this season.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
SUN QUESTIONABLE Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA) suffered an ACL injury in the spring and is questionable for the season. Sun is ahead of schedule, according to early reports.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines. SANTOS COMPLETES RECRUITING CLASS Brazilian National Teamer Fernanda Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has signed a National Letter of Intent for the 2003-04 season. Santos is the second National Teamer to commit to play for The Beach for the 2003-04 season. Santos, a 6-3 guard, will play her sophomore season at Grayson Junior College (TX) after playing at Lee Univeristy (TN) as a freshman. |
