49ers Lose First Road Game of the Season Johnson Scores 19 Points in Loss November 27, 2002 CHENEY, WA-- Long Beach State women's basketball (1-2) despite closing to within four midway through the second half, were unable to overcome a poor first half, losing their first road game of the season, 62-49 at Eastern Washington (1-1). Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) led The Beach with 19 points, while Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) added nine points and 13 rebounds. Candice Wilson added 11 points and six steals, but shot just 28% from the field, including 20% in the first half. LBSU stayed close thanks to their rebounding, outrebounding the host Eagles 50-to-43. Kathleen Nygaard led EWU with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Stephanie Ulmer and Michelle Demetruck added 10 points a piece. The Eagles shot 38% from the field. Tiffany Schmidt's three-pointer with 4:25 put the game away, giving the Eagles a 53-40, as The Beach at one point closed to within four with 13:46 left. EWU would go up 48-38 on a basket from Nygaard. Connors layup closed the gap to within 34-30 with 13:46 left but two free throws by Nygaard extended the lead back up to 42-34 at 11:07. The 49ers were able to close to within 31-25, off a layup from Glory Johnson with 15:42 left. LBSU struggled in the first half, hitting just 20% of their shots, including 0-for-11 from the three-point arc, to fall behind 27-18. The 49ers started the game in a 3-for-16 funk, falling behind 18-6 as post players Sarah Stout and Glory Johnson picked up two quick fouls over the first eight minutes. The Beach return home on Sunday, December 1 when they host Florida in a regionally televised game on the Sunshine Network at The Pyramid at 1 p.m. LBSU then travel cross country to the Stetson Hatter Classic next weekend for two.
