| 49ers Upset in Season Opener Women's Basketball loses 73-58 to University of San Diego

LONG BEACH, CA – Long Beach State women's basketball (0-1)dropped its season opener to the University of San Diego Toreros (1-0), 73-58, at The Pyramid on Saturday afternoon. Long Beach will next be in action Monday, November 25 as they take on New Mexico State in The Pyramid at 7:30pm.
After going on a 14-2 run, Long Beach came back strong from their 38-26 halftime deficit to tie the game at 40-40 with 15:49 left in the game off a three-pointer by Candice Wilson. The Toreros answered with a 23-10 run to take a 63-50 lead with 6:20 left in the game. San Diego never relinquished the lead, or allowed Long Beach back into the game after that run.
Leading The Beach in scoring was Candice Wilson with 13 points, shooting 6 of 13 from the field, and she also added seven assists. Three 49ers were tied with 11 points apiece; Lauren Bull, Jayme Connors, and Christina Mack. Connors led the team with 13 rebounds, as the 49ers out-rebounded USD, 44 to 38.
Erin Malich led San Diego with 19 points and nine rebounds, Marie Plocher added 13 points and eight boards and Kerri Nakamoto was the third Torero in double-digits with 11 points. The Toreros shot 44% from the field for the game and were 22-32 (.688) at the free throw line. The 49ers were just 5-17 (.313) at the charity stripe and committed 20 turnovers.
San Diego struck first off a three-pointer from Plocher, pushing its lead to as many as 20 points (36-16) before the 49ers pulled to within 38-26 at the half. BOX SCORE |
