49ERS PLAY EXHIBITION, NOVEMBER 17 49ers Open Season on November 23, Host San Diego PDF FILE FULL 2002-03 SCHEDULE EXHIBITION THIS SUNDAY The Beach will play their first and only exhibition game of the season on Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m. in The Pyramid against the AAU squad "Love and Basketball." L&B is made up of 10 former collegians, who reside in Southern California. The team's name is derived from the movie of the same name. L&B features five players who played for area schools in UCLA's Marie Philman, USC's Denise Woods and Tashara Carter, UC Irvine's Allah-mi Basheer and Pepperdine's Dee Braxton. By the time L&B heads to The Mid on Sunday, they will have played in six of their eight contests. Early on, L$B, at 3-2, defeated CS Fullerton (73-66), CS Northridge (71-47), and UCLA (73-74) and lost to Stanford (89-73) and USC (73-55). They play at Pepperdine on Saturday. RUNNING THE SHOW Dallas Bolla enters her eighth season as the head coach of LBSU basketball. The Beach have gone 106-97 over the previous seven seasons, winning at least 16 games in each of the last four seasons. The 49ers have won 10 Big West games in five of Bolla's seven seasons.
TWO HOME GAMES TO BEGIN SEASON The Niners will open up the 2002-03 campaign with two home contests, hosting San Diego in the team's home opener on Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m. before hosting New Mexico State on Monday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m. LBSU's first road contest is Wednesday, November 27 at 7 p.m. at Eastern Washington.
WADE TROPHY TO BE PRESENTED All-time leading scorer and two-time All-Amercain LaTaunya Pollard (1979-1983) will be presented with the Wade Trophy, as part of the team's alumni reception, at halftime of the team's opener with San Diego. The Wade Trophy is given to the top women's basketball player each year, as the 2002-03 season marks the 20th season since Pollard earned the honor. TV GAME AGAINST GATORS ON DEC. 1 The 49ers will try to pack The Pyramid for its first TV game this season, against national-power Florida on Sunday, December 1 at 1 p.m. Those interested in bringing groups to the game, can contact the marking office at (562) 985-7978. The game will be broadcast on the Sunshine Network.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD The Beach were picked to finish third in both the Big West Coaches and Media polls. UC Santa Barbara, winners of the last seven conference titles, was picked to win it, again, followed by Pacific and LBSU. The next tier features Idaho, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, while CS Fullerton and CS Northridge make up the rest.
GLASER HEADED TO GERMANY Six-foot six redshirt center Petra Glaser (Amisberg, Germany), a member of a couple of different A2 German National teams, left Tuesday, November 12, to try to make the German National team and help them through qualifying tournaments for future Olympic competition. Out of 16 players invited, 12 are expected to make the team.
NEW FACES FROM THE BENCH The Beach brought in two new assistant coaches this summer in coaching veteran Pat Charity and former 49er Charel Bailey. They add to Associate Head Coach Tuonisia Turner, who enters her seventh year. A veteran of 20 years of coaching experience, Charity spent the previous season as an assistant at UNLV. Bailey returns to The Beach for her first season as a Division-I assistant. Bailey averaged 7.6 points and 6.1 rebounds, starting 93 games in her career.
READY TO TAKE CHARGE Post players senior Glory Johnson (Phoenix, AZ) and sophomore Jayme Connors (Las Vegas, NV) are expected to take charge this season, returning as the team's top two scorers. The two combined for 17 points and nearly 10 rebounds per game in their first seasons at The Beach. Johnson shot 55%. Connors was named to the Big West's All-Freshman Team behind a 47% clip.
SHARP SHOOTERS Jinga Gosschalk (Amsterdam, Holland) and Lauren Bull (Rockford, IL) made up 70% of the team's three-pointers last season, as both return for the 2002-03 season. Gosschalk (pronounced Haws-hall-ik) shot 40% from beyond the arc, just missing out on ranking in the Big West's top-five, while Bull hit 30% of her three's.
EXPERIENCE AT GUARD Starting point guard Candice Wilson (Sacramento) and key resevere Christina Mack (Phoenix, AZ) give The Beach experience in the backcourt. Wilson started 23 games last year and averaged 4.4 points per game with 69 assists, while Mack appeared in all 29 games, averaging 10 minutes per contest.
HOW'S THE WEATHER UP THERE? The 49ers feature one of the taller teams in the conference with seven players over 6-foot. Redshirt freshman Sarah Stout (Orlando, FL), at 6-5, is the 49ers tallest player in 2002-03, joining Jayme Connors, Denise Hagen, CeCe Rush (6-3), Glory Johnson (6-2) and Lauren Bull (6-0). Petra Glaser, at 6-6, will redshirt this season.
REACHING THE PRO'S Jackie Moore (1998-2001), the former Big West Conference Player of the Year (2001) was a reserve for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA in 2002. Moore played in 18 games, starting two, scoring 42 points and adding 29 rebounds.
ON THE TUBE The 49ers will be featured twice on television this season. The Sunshine Network will broadcast the game from The Pyramid on December 1, while KDOC-LA, as part of the Big West television package, will broadcast the heated UCSB-49er home matchup on February 26.
SUN QUESTIONABLE Freshman guard Liz Sun (Chatsworth, CA) suffered an ACL injury in the spring and is questionable for the season. Sun is ahead of schedule, according to early reports.
TRANSFERS WILL REDSHIRT Six-foot-six German National Team member junior Petra Glaser (UNLV) and sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon (Pepperdine) will both redshirt after transferring from Division-I institutions, as per NCAA guidelines. |
