Dr. Fran Schaafsma

The credibility the women's athletics program has achieved started with Schaafsma. She began a 25-year association with the univeristy in 1962 when she was hired as an assistant professor and basketball and volleyball coach. She directed the basketball team to the school's first SoCal Intercollegiate title in 1963 and was 209-73 in 17 seasons. Schaafsma coached volleyball through 1970, and her final team finished fourth in the AIAW Championships, which were played at LBSU. Schaafsma also coached golf at LBSU as was interim director of athletics in 1983 and associate director of athletics in 1984-85.
