Former Long Beach State standout Libby Fontanilla returned to her alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2018 season, before moving to the role of administrative assistant.
In her second year on staff, Fontanilla saw the Beach make an appearance in the postseason for the first time in five years as Long Beach State hosted the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) after finishing the season 12-17. The Beach went 9-7 in Big West Conference action and had four players named to the All-Conference Team as Hailey Harward, Kashauna Williams, and YiZhi Xue were named to the First Team, while Katie Kennedy was named to the All-Freshman Team.
In 2018, Fontanilla helped Long Beach State to a 16-13 overall record and an 8-8 Big West Conference mark. The Beach had five Big West All-Conference selections as Tyler Spriggs was named to the First Team, while Hailey Harward, Emma Kirst and YiZhi Xue collected honorable mention status. Rounding out the group, Kashauna Williams earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.
Prior to returning to LBSU, Fontanilla coached both indoor and beach volleyball at Fullerton College from 2016-17. Fontanilla also has 10 years of experience coaching at the club level. She is currently in her second year coaching at Mizuno Volleyball Club.
Fontanilla was a student-athlete at Long Beach State where she played both indoor and beach volleyball. She was on the 2013 beach squad that won the AVCA National Championship against Pepperdine. In 2013, Fontamilla was part of the first-ever collegiate beach volleyball team at Long Beach State as she led the Beach to the semifinals.
As part of the LBSU women’s indoor team, Fontanilla helped the Beach win the 2011 Big West Conference Championship. With Fontanilla leading the defensive effort, Long Beach State made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2011.
Before beginning her collegiate career at Long Beach State, Fontanilla attended Santiago High School in Corona, Calif., and played club for Goldenwest Volleyball.
